  • Need a map, today!

In twelve hours, my comrades are coming home to play SMAC TCP/IP. So a thought struck me... could those wise and merciful souls at apolyton provide us with a map with decent starting positions so that nobody has to colonize the great dunes? It's just that... a vainilla SMAC map, all/standard world, with all the seven factions. I *could* do it myself, but by doing so I would spoil much of the appeal of the early game exploration. I know I don't deserve such a treat, but think it this way; should such a map be hosted, millions of players worldwide would benefit from it! (okay, I may be exaggerating a little).

In exchange, you can have... my goodwill and friendship. Some of my valuable research data, perhaps? Thanks!

OK, your confusing me a little here: do you want "just" the map, or do you want the units placed for the factions as well, in order to provide the "ideal" starting positions?
If its just the map I can go home at lunch time and upload a "Large" map for you. Should be close to what you want as far as settings are concerned.

Good thing I checked this before leaving.

I might sound confusing because I am not sure what I want myself. I think it could either be:

      * A scenario, with custom start locations.
      * A savegame of Deirdre, turn one.

In a TCP/IP game, human players dropped continue as AIs, right? Because I doubt we'll gather seven players, and we haven't picked factions yet.

Also, I have noticed TCP/IP games have some sort of boost, the first base has a population of three, rec commons and recycling tanks. How could that be worked out? Is that a scenario flag?

      Thanks a lot!

OK, under such short notice this is the best I can do. Each Faction starts in a similarly equipped location (i.e. first base on a river with something good nearby). Each starting base is size 3 w/ Rec Commons and Recycling Tank. Each player gets an additional 2 Rover CPs and 3 Scouts (Spartans also get their additional scout rover). Passwords not set. First turn is to Gaians.

        Hope this will do!

First of all, I'm very grateful to Darsnan for readily helping me. It's good to know we have people eager to help in these forums.

I'm sorry to say the scenario didn't work. SMAC always crashed in some computer as soon as I hit the launch button. Don't worry, we let the game create a random map and it didn't go that bad. However, I think some inquiry might be in order. Why would this happen? We double checked the versions, and that was okay (besides, that one would have revealed before any players could join, and also we were able to play with a random map, so that possibility is right out of the question). In player's computer, once he rebooted the alpha.txt was blank, so he had to copy it.

I'm sorry if I'm being nitpicky, but I'm really curious as for why would this happen. And also sorry for the poor prose, but I haven't slept in many hours, so... goodnight.

Sorry to hear it didn't work. Did you try running the scenario just on your machine to see if it worked (i.e. hotseat)? Also, did you try playing the scenario as a PBEM to see if that worked? I'm asking as I did play it hotseat style here for a turn to ensure that it worked before I delivered it.

Other than this I don't know what else to think of off the top of my head: I've actually never set up or played a TCP/IP scenario before.

It seems that as a hotseat game it works just fine. Would ANY scenario be troublesome in TCP/IP? Got to check that out...
