  • Newbie PBEM wanted 4-1-2006

I am considering playing SMAC (I have original only)

I need to install and get pathes, ect.

I wonder if anyone would be willing to help get my feet wet by playing with me?

I am a veteran PBEM'er from CTP,CIVIII Conquests and CIV IV

Just asking and thanks for the time

I'm up for a game. Are you thinking of a 1v1, or co-op or what? More players (No more than 4 total would be advised though)?

I'm more or less a veteran PBEMer (Since 2002).

    SMAC is fine by me.

do you need the disk in to play?

      I have a legitimate copy.

I ask because I am in 45+ games now.

In CTP you dont need it, simply launch from email server

In CIVIII Conquests you have to save to hd and then launch game and load save

In CIVIV same as CTP except you need disk in, but you can auto send from within game

      Thanks

Ill locate the disc today and then install and update so when we get the players we will be ready

No, if you do a full install the CD isn't needed, it just comes straight from the hard drive.

        Basically it's:

Recieve email with turn (Usually zipped).
        Unzip turn if needed.
        Launch SMAC
        Multiplayer - PBEM selection
        Load file
        Enter password.
        Play turn.
        Hit end turn
Save somewhere, remembering to change the file name to the next player and the next year if needed. The programme now closes.
        Fire up email programme.
Zip turn & email to next player.
        Play hangman.

Not played conquest so can't comment on that.

It's fairly simple once you've done it once or twice though.

When we do get all the players (How many do you want btw?), we will need to get a CMN to create the game. SMAC tends to give wildly disbalanced starting positions, so the CMN will balance that out, set passwords and generally make the map fair and equal.

                    Yeah exactly that.

CMN originally stood for Creator Moderator Narrator, but the narrator aspect has more or less been stopped. (Making a log of game events at the end of the game.)

They now create the game, and moderate any rules issues etc.

                        Offering service as CMN.

I don't know how it works in C3C, but as the game starter you've got full control over what rules we play by. Typically, PBEMs are played on Transcend level, with directed research, random events off (the way random events are assigned to bases is really... strange and biased). You can also determine how many AIs and what starting units the CMN places.

Grampa Troll and Lobo, may I suggest you choose your factions? I'm happy with any of the original seven, so I'll choose after you guys.

With regard to settings, how about these?

                              Code:
                              Preference..	|	Settings

                              Map size	|	Large
                              Ocean |	50-70%
                              Erosion |	Average
                              Life |	Average
                              Clouds |	Dense
                              Difficulty	|	Transcend

                              Transcend	|	On
                              Diplomatic	|	On
                              Economic	|	On
                              Cooperative	|	On
                              Do or Die	|	On
                              Flexible start	|	On
                              Tech stag	|	Off
                              Spoils of war	|	On
                              Blind research	|	Off
                              Intense riv	|	Off
                              No survey	|	On
                              No scatter	|	Off
                              No rnd events	|	On
                              Time Warp	|	Off
                              Iron man	|	Off
                              Rand person	|	Off
                              Rand social	|	Off
I think those are mostly standard, with a few possible exceptions about map selections, which the CMN will likely modify anyway.

There is a rules list in the first post of this thread at CGN which I'd suggest we follow.
