        • Ok

I think we are all finding the turns longer and the diplomacy more important . . . I know I didn't expect that we could continue our previous torrid pace.

I should be able to play tonight ---

                  • The USS Ticonderoga sailed northward. The Captain knew that he had a very good "disciplined" crew but wished he could have trained more. The sad reality was that the navy was so new a service that he felt they still had a long way to go to achieve excellence. Unortunately, Uniersity Command felt it imperitive that they set sail immediately, with the Hood as escort.

The captain tensed as he sighted land through his telescope. He knew that the Spartans controlled the land on either side of the channel he must travel through. The intelligence reports he had studied so intently the previous evening were useless. Half the reports that the Spartans would fire on any university shipping sighted while the rest opined that the Spartan request for a truce was genuine and that military in this strait, far from their bases, would not alarm them. Military presence was described as anywhere from non-existent to division-strength. The captain spoke , "Sound General Quarters". The klaxxon sounded and the crew rushed to their posts.

The Ticonderoga led the Hood into the narrowest part of the Strait. Suddenly, without warning, an impact burst exploded off the port bow. "Men, it appears we have our answer .. . This is a shooting war. Evasive maneuvres! Gunnery, plot their location and engage"

The Ticonderoga suddenly shook by another imapct burst and then another. The captain could not help but envy the Spartans their elite level of gunnery. His missile tubes barked again and again but he could see they were ineffectual against what appeared to be fortified emplacement above. He ordered more speed in an attempt to clear the area and indicated to his comm officer that they should tell HQ they were withdrawing.

But instead a comm message arrived back from HQ " Fire flares on enemy position prior to withdrawal". The captain was confused but gave the order. Within seconds a dozen flares bracketed the Spartan artillery post. Then without warning a trio of AIRPLANES appeared and dove toward the guns, impact weapons blazing. The captain watched thunderstruck as explosions blossomed around the post. Then a louder boom as the captain witnessed the total immolation of the guns.

The comm crackled "Navy, this is the AIR FORCE. Glad to be able to save your bacon there. We will patrol to see if there are any more bad guys out there"

The captain was chagrinned but there was work to be done. His orders had stated explicitly that if fired upon, he was to engage enemy unitys or destroy any infrastructure. The damage reports indicated some minor hits while the Hood was undamaged.

The Chancellor met his military leaders

"So it appears this airpower was quite effective today"

The airforce rep looked smug "Yes sir"

"But what happened to our navy today? I was told that the Ticonderoga class was the very best"

The admiral looked uncomfortable " It is sir. It is the fastest ship with the best weapons afloat. But sir, it went up against very heavily trained troops emplaced at a higher altitude. The good news is that it would have escaped the encounter with only minimal damage even without air force intervention"

                    "So she is still functional?"

Yes sir and the Hood is undamaged and can be upgraded to equivalent weaponry at sea. They have already destroyed 2 sectors of Spartan roads after the airforce departed the scene. These were the roads the Spartans were building towards our empire. As well, the ships can patrol far outside the range of our airplanes and interdict Spartan shipping. I believe that you will continue to find very good value in a strong navy. We knew that land based artillery would be a danger and the key will be to range further offshore so this is not an issue"

                    UNN NEWS

Chancellor Flubber announced that a skirmish broke out in our dispute with the Spartans today. A Naval flotilla travelling in international waters was fired upon without warning by Spartan artillery. In the ensuing battle, a Spartan unit was destroyed and the ships exited the area without casualties. The Chancellor gave a statement

"We continue to wish for peace with our Spartan neighbors and are perplexed as to why they would fire on shipping traversing peacefully. I salute our brave men and women for their success today but remain hopeful that further actions will be unnecessary
