THE LONG ROAD
Paradigm Engineers Undertake Massive Construction Project
08.00.44 / M.Y. 2116 - (Highway 1 Construction Site, Elysium Highlands, Chiron): A brown haze hangs over the green-flecked highlands; as a group of nutrient farmers pause in their seeding to watch, a phalanx of lumbering former units creep slowly down from the north, carving a flat, narrow track out of the rugged hillside. Construction of Paradigm's first permanent overland route began in earnest only a week ago - following months of planning by civil engineers and planetologists, as well as heated debate in the chambers of the company's Financial Appropriations department - but its arrival can not come too soon for the hard-working agricultural workers. "We drive in our crops every week over dirt tracks," says Arva Corlein, who plants Centauri-adapted corn. "It's a hard trip, and it's dangerous. We lost a rover two weeks ago on a track that got washed out by heavy rain. The road will make our lives much easier."

Plans released to the public last week reveal the route of the planned road, nicknamed "Highway 1", which takes a more-or-less straight path from Paradigm Headquarters in the Elysium Highlands to Soundstage #28, the newest Omnimedia production facility currently under construction in the river-few lowlands approximately 60km to the south. Engineers estimate the route will take several years to complete, but the initial 4km segment leading to Paradigm HQ is already accomodating heavy traffic from local mineral collectors, scout patrols, and support personnel. Tranportation Deputy Michel Oyal is requesting that rover drivers to be patient as congestion problems are resolved, and to remember to keep right and signal turns. "Courtesy first, in all things," he said with a smile. "It's going to be slow getting around for awhile, until our traffic control systems are in place."

As economic conditions continue to improve, manufacturing infrastructure expands, and fewer resources are required to maintain and expand living quarters and life support systems, Paradigm officials plan to further expand the transportation network. This, they hope, will open up more underutilized terrain for development with automated farms, mineral extraction sites, sensor arrays, and other extra-urban facilities. Plans are already being drawn up for the next Paradigm settlement, which will be begun "as soon as an adequate location, material resources, and the necessary manpower are available," according to Oyal. "We have hundreds of eager volunteers looking to head up the next big project. The waiting list for applicants is very long."

RESEARCH TAKES FRONT SEAT
Work Begins on Paradigm's First Dedicated Research Facility
11.39.15 / M.Y. 2116 - (Paradigm Omnimedia Headquarters, Elysium Highlands, Chiron): Paradigm Omnimedia Chief of Technological Advancement Tresa Njoly announced today in a brief press conference the start of construction of a specialized, computer-driven research facility, or "network node", inside the upper-level administrative section of Paradigm Headquarters. Space has been kept reserved within the base's information technologies area, but until now the resources to build a dedicated research facility were not available. In her address, Njoly indicated that ". . . in Net Node Alpha, there will be enough parallel- and distributed-computing power to tackle the toughest scientific and technological problems: from genetics to high-energy physics, population modeling to astrophysics, nanotechnology to molecular fluid mechanics."
Net Node Alpha's Central Processor Core
Once Net Node Alpha's computing modules are on-line and operational, their first task will be to work through the final stumbling blocks keeping Earth vegetation from fully adapting to the Centauri environment. "There are a few genetic mysteries left to unlock," she said, "and Alpha will give us the keys." Njoly was also quotes as saying she believed Paradigm CEO and Maestro Jason Clor intended to expand the network node model to include every future Paradigm center. "The computing power of these nodes increases by an exponential factor for each node linked to the network. Researchers at each center will have immediate access to the data and opinions of researchers at every other center. It's the ideal structure for scientific discovery."
