    Kesselring was the Nazi General in charge of German forces in Italy in 1944, and mounted a very skilled defense of the Italian "boot", first at Monte Cassino and then again on the "Gothic Line" as it was called. Essentially for the Gothic Line Kesselring put up his defensive positions just north of a river that crosses Italy in the north. There was a major highway that ran parallel to the river which Kesselring used to speed his reserves to what ever sector the Allies threatened. It cost the western Allies dearly to overcome both the Cassino and Gothic Line positions.

    Here in SMAC(X) land if Kody were to "build" a river that could then facilitate transport of defenders to "hot" areas, this would serve as the highway did in the aforementioned example. Well placed bunkers with outlieing sensors then become natural redoubts for defense. In front of the bunker create flat "kill zones" where speeders get their attack bonus. The results would be similar to the tactics employed by Kesselring, I believe.

      Ahh darsnan

      I like the way you think-- In one of my last SP games I built defences along the lines you suggest on the AIs attack route. There was even a monolith a couple of tiles back from the line.

      Some pre-terraforming can make an attack very very difficult prior to airpower

        The only problem I see is that the level of boost a faction would need to even have a prayer against 6 co-operating enemies would be a killer if they instead fight each other. getting the balance right may be tough
        Yeah the balance is really tough to get. It also depends alot on the skill of the players, and whether they'll use all the tactics I would use. I've used a few tricks to ensure some kind of balance.

        Maybe I'll just throw the scenerio out right now and hope for the best. Just to scare everyone... Enigma has gas units

          It would be amusing if he made wholesale use of them and the atrocities led to the worms knocking the king off the hill ( or have you made it so that gassing not an atrocity??) ooh the possibilities

          It would actually be funny to see the worms "win" a game -- I actually think that that is one of Darsnan's goals with some of the tweaks he has made to the natives at times

            Darn it too Enigma had too many bonuses. He shouldn't be getting IA in turn 2103, I think I need to rip out some of his monorails.

                Meh, with seven factions, IA by 2106 is doable... I know I just tested

                  The question is then, what are we going to do with it? I mean at 2106 most factions may still be building colony pods for their third base. Not sure anybody would get spare industry power for building crawlers.

                    No but Morgan could rush a crawler to crawl some more nuts to grow to size 2 that much quicker and then rush the pod. Even if your 3rd base was delayed a turn, I think you would be better in the long run as the 4th,5th and 6th come quicker

                      I'm not opposed to this. Personally I really like the game format, as probably do other players who would volunteer to be the bear in future versions of this game. I think with a little experience and feedback that it could become quite an entertaining format, both for the bear as well as for the "normal" human players.
                      I plan on keeping a log of my game, primarily of observations, for the purpose of improving future versions of this format. If anyone else is interested in doing the same why afterwards we could compile our feedback and hopefully produce an very balanced format.

                        I would have thought something like a prebuilt CBA and Virtual World with say 4 nutrient satellites and maybe some interesting defensive land or specials with some terraforming already done would be a starting point.
