Does anyone know whether you can give away, say, a sea former at start to an ordinary SMAC land faction (that is no SMAX Pirates). And if you can, what happens? Do you start immediatelly next to it (ie. on the coast)? Or do you have to explore until you eventually discover it?

Free sea units to land factions

The 90% of the times when you land you do it next to the sea.
So, adding UNIT,5 (Sea Former) to your faction you begin with a sea former.
You must remember that you can't use "Flexible Starting Location" because the base works as an ocean square for sea units, so no base=no ocean=no sea former.
There is a 10% of possibility that your base is in the hinterland.
In this case... you cannot use your former! (but you have it!)
To use it you must transform your base in a costal base (maybe using some planetbusters... )
I hope I would be helpful.

We discoverd the wheel ages ago...How hard can it be to transform a Sea Former to the shore?"I'm having a sort of hard time paying attention because my automated teller has started speaking to me, sometimes actually leaving weird messages on the screen, in green lettering, like "Cause a Terrible Scene at Sotheby's" or "Kill the President" or "Feed Me a Stray Cat", and I was freaked out by the park bench that followed me for six blocks last Monday evening and it too spoke to me."

Remember that to terrafform down the sea you spend 16*(2^D) credits where D is the distance in square from your nearest base and take at least 8 turn each square (with the WP and superformer ability)
In a normal mid game your HQ can produce a PB in 10-12 turns...
and a tectonic missile in 8-10 turns (just to put the things in order )Aslo the gods are impotent against men's stupidity --Frederich Shiller

You cannot transport sea unit in any way. It is possible to land tranport an aircraft , but what use can have? Moving missile launch base? (with a movement of 12 square/turn is very useful)

Imagine this combination:
Unit 1: Transport, No Armour, Hovertank/Speeder --> 0-1-2/3
Units 2...: Weapon/armour/chassis of choice and amphibious ability --> ?-?-? Amphibious
Would this allow you to move the units into the land transport and then you use them to attack from the transport! What would happen if the transport was destroyed though...... This body holding me reminds me of my own mortality...
... Pain is an illusion...
