Is there a way i can switch the graphics for special units like colony pods, probe teams, and mind worms? Is there a simple 2D graphics file that i can edit? How far can i take graphics changes?
As much as I know, the only unit graphic file you can change is the unit(s).pcx (with or without 's', I don't remember). It's a pcx file like the factions graphic, so you can edit it with any graphic application that support this kind of files.
Unfortunately, it does only define graphics for very few units (the alien artifact, the mind worm). But there are empty slots were you can put your own graphics and also some unused graphics (like a strange sea monster and some kind of rocket).
Once you have put your own graphic there, you can define it to be the graphic for a basic unit, and only a basic one. I don't think you can edit graphics for units you create with the workshop.
To assign your graphic, you need edit the alpha.txt file, find the basic units section, and assign a number in one of the columns. This number is zero for the first row of the units.pcx, 1 for the second. I don't exactly where you need put this number, but it should be explained in the alpha.txt. Also be sure you put your graphic in the leftmost slot of one of the rows(in the units.pcx), as only this one seem to be supported. Your graphic will not have different facings though.
