Before you go any further, check which people are participating in SotM. You might find someone else in this thread has more insight in the inner workings of that mod then you do.
And if you're that anxious, just start yourself then.

This mod isn't going to be finished in a couple of weekends after the SDK comes out, so I don't think we should rush in. We might as well wait for the SDK and final version of Civ4. If you want to be helpful just familiarise yourself with the XML relevant to what you're interested on working at (Or do some python if you're able to program at all).
Just to raise a new issue, does the once inevitable, now announced expansion Warlords mean anything to us? Are we going to have to document all changes to make a compatible version?
A Firaxian recently mentioned on another forum that the patch needed QA by Take2 before release, and that Take2 was busy on a new release delaying the patch. Then they started work on a further updated patch in the past few days, further delaying everything. This being the case, are there any programmers wanting access to the SDK beta test? If so, PM me.
We should be able to ignore the Warlords expansion if we want, since Civ 4 and the expected SDK should provide all the functionality we need. The expansion should only have new media (such as faction leaders), scenarios, and other peripheral content.
Actually the vassal state mechanism could be of interest for us - it may work similar to surrendered factions. According to screenshots you can even trade vassals.
