  • Soren on C4:AC

from the chat just seconds ago

[Soren] btw, I was expecting to see a SMAC mod eventually... lokks like you guys can't wait to get started.

[Soren] There's nothing that should hold it back... it's a significant amount of work though...

[Soren] yeah, the C4-AC people might want to take a long hard look at the promotion system. It may be easier to use it than write a unit workshop.

    hrm,

"Easier to write...." would seem to suggest a unit workshop is at least possible. Sounds like Civ4 is more moddable than I had imagined.

(Though I'd still say keeping as many Civ4 systems as possible is wiser.)

AS I already once suggested, promotion system should be possible to be converted into design workshop with little additional coding.

I wont repeat details here, but once we get to it, I'll put up a design for the Workshop.

Why doesn't this thread have [C4:AC] in front of the title??

Because it has C4:AC at the end of it

                    From the chat log:

Soren> sn00py: the SDK will simply be all the game and AI code, which can be compiled into a separate dll to replace the default one.
                    Hur.

Sounds like if you really want to to super-heavy modifications (like new interface pieces, such as view of satellites and the unit workshop), you'll need C++ coders--but just about anything will be possible.

the promotion thing should be able to be molded into a workshop pretty easily, espcially the special ablities part

                        Not only.

Signs are that we will be basing the entire workshoop on it - all the armors, weapons and of course abilities.
Reactors would then fall to unit 'strenght' and some things will need to be coded in specially, like supply convoy weapon/ability.

Just a quick Q for you involved in the C4-AC project: Do you guys ever wonder if SMAC2 is already in the works based on C4? It seems to me that if its possible for us to do it, it'd be cake for Firaxis to do it (very familiar with their own system no doubt!). As much as I so love the growing trend of games to make modding a huge part of the attraction and depth potential of a game, it also, paranoically, means the same company can make use of the extensibility of their modulized and legible coding to make expansions and entirely new games on their own engine.

Would it, or would it not be tragic for C4:AC if nearing the completion of your (our?) mod, Firaxis announce SMAC2 on the Civ4 engine?

I doubt it'd be tragic but a major disappointment indeed.
We're building mod mostly because there are no signs SMAC2 is under construction. If we had such signs, we would wait for more and it would be possible then that we wait until SMAC 2 is out.
A good modding expierence in any case.

SMAC 2 would never be as good as the original game. SMAX factions already lacked depth, and without Brian Reynolds, I doubt Firaxis can repeat the magic.
