a good map maker?

I've been searching around for some time now, but can you guys suggest a good map creater? or list the ones you guys use, one thats preferably noob friendly. thanks.

Do you mean for Smac(X)? If so, Smacksim recently worked on the mapbuilder section of the alpha.txt file and improved the automap building quite a bit.

just the original SMAC (no add ons or expansions.) and where could I find smacksim?

There are no external programs for map creation, unfortunately, but if you do a search of Worldbuilder and my name, you'll find the article posted here which shows how to improve the native textfile for producing better maps. It was only a month ago or so, in this forum.

Well, in the 'editor' mode (cntrl + K) of the game of course.

Just start a game and use that key combination. You enter the editor then, and Planet is yours for the making.

Geomodder is right. Check out the SMAC Academy and look towards the bottom of the page for Googlie's article on using the Scenario Editor, which also includes info on building maps.
