  • New faction

I'd appreciate some input on this faction I am making. They communicate with the Planet itself to learn how to harvest its energy (which gives them a planet and economy bonus), and also build enormous wildlife preserves inside their bases (which cuts down on their hab limits).

    +1 Planet
    +1 Economy
    -1 Industry
    -1 Growth
Hab limit of 5/12 (modifier of 2)
    They can't use Free Market.

So do you think it is balanced as is? Would adding a +1 efficiency be out of the question? I ask that because with limited space they would have to learn to be more efficient with the space they have. Thanks.

they seem slightly weak, however i do not think that you should give them an efficency bonus

how about instead, give them +1 energy from fungus squares, which would give them some incentive to keep fungus around instead of clearing it

      korn,

That wouldn't be incentive enough to keep fungus around... 1 nutrient and 1 energy is a piece of land I would never use. My initial bases are usually built around whatever monoliths I happen to find, or at least terrain that gives me +2 nutrients and +1 minerals, on which I can put a solar collector.

Would a 10 or 15% bonus to psy combat be too much? Do you think the +1 efficiency makes them too powerful or did you just not like it?

i think they are slightly weak but only need a small change to make them ok...i think that adding +1 efficency is kinda drastic

working with that it sounds like they are well adapted to making use of fungus instead of being psi warriors...

so how about +1 nutrients, +1 minerals +1 energy in the fungus sound? if that is too powerful take out the minerals...

          Korn,

I agree with you that a psy attack bonus is not in order. What you say is logical regarding giving them bonuses in fungus squares... however the only way to make it have any worth is to give bonuses to all three, and I think that is too powerful. I dunno though, maybe it isn't.

Adding +1 Nutients and +1 Energy for fungus would help. Also, since you said this faction would have nature preserves in the base, they should get a Centauri Preserve in each base

              +1 Planet
              +1 Economy
              -1 Industry
              -1 Growth
needs hab limit to grow past size 5
              no free market
              +1 nutrients in fungus
              +1 energy in fungus
*then either robust growth or impunity green so they won't get -3 growth (zero population growth)

i think that would make a balanced faction

                doug

they really don't need centauri preserves in every base to make them a good balanced faction on par with the other SMAC factions

Korn-- Yeah, that actually looks perfect. Not sure if I'll make that robust or impunity... I'll have to think about it. Thanks for your help.

Doug-- Centauri preserve does fit but as Korn said it doesn't go with the balancing of the faction. Thanks anyway.

I changed the faction a little to make them a little less powerful. Instead of +1 Planet and +1 Economy, they have +2 Planet. Also, I made it so that Centauri Empathy gives you +1 minerals in fungus squares.

                    The faction is now:

                    +2 Planet
                    -1 Industry
                    -1 Growth
                    Hab limits of 5/12
                    Impune to Green
+1 Nutrients and Energy in fungus
                    Can't use Free Market

Note that this disallows both population booms (without a golden age), and also the ability to boost economy to +2 (until late in the game when Eudaimonia is available).
As a plus, upon receiving centauri empathy they have 2/1/1 in fungus squares. They can still get more out of terraforming (with farms and solar collectors-- 2/1/(1 or 2) on decent terrain, so I think this is reasonable. Also, they will still have the same tendency as everyone else to build tree farms and hybrid forests, and plant forests with drilling to aquifers as those squares give 3/2/3 which is better than they can get until much later in the game.

I think that it now is too much like Gaia's Stepdaughters
"Spirit merges with matter to sanctify the universe. Matter transcends to return to spirit. The interchangeability of matter and spirit means the starlit magic of the outermost life of our universe becomes the soul-light magic of the innermost life of our self." - Dennis Kucinich, candidate for the U. S. presidency
