After reading the threads about Star Wars and Ringworld factions, and seeing a banner on this site for a LOTR movie site, I couldn't resist putting Middle Earth on Alpha Centauri . . . but rather than draw up factions from scratch, why not work with what's already in place:
1. The Hobbits = the Morganites. Hobbits like "creature comforts" and may have had the best economy in Middle Earth since they weren't at war with anyone.
2. The Elves = the Gaians. Harmony with nature, etc. Lady Deidre makes a decent stand-in for Galadriel.
3. The Dwarves = Hive (underground bases).
4. Riders of Rohan = Spartans. Doctrine Mobility!
5. Gondor = the Peacekeepers.
6. Isengard = UoP. Saruman was the preeminent "scientist" of his day.
7. Mordor = well, the Believers, by default. But it kind of fits.
