I have been playing around with SMACX and creating new factions and have run into a roadblock that I have seen expressed by several people here, difficulty with new base graphics. I was wondering if there is any creators out there that help us out(by us, I mean the graphically challenged and paintshop pro illiterate).
After playing around a bit (I am fairly new to the SMAC community) I found that with the way the game accesses the .pcx files it is possible to create a new faction then to rename an existing .pcx graphics file to the appropriate appropriete file name, with this less then brillant realization. I created a new faction using Yang as the template then after finishing the faction, copying and renaming sid.pcx. sid2.pcx and sid3.pcx to newfaction.pcx newfaction2.pcx...etc, Now I have a new faction with all the sid graphics including the new base icons of sid.pcx (Note: I couldn't use the sid faction as my template, the faction editor crashes when I tried to open his datalinks page in the editor, that's the reason for all the 'beating around the bush' instead of just modifing sid files)
Now for the request. If some creator out there can take the conical and pyrimidal base artitectures downloads, paste them onto the sid.pcx files, make all the voodoo signs with your pallete and etc..
then gives us a place we (the illiterate) can download them as .pcx files.(maybe even here at apolyton) Where all we (there's that we/us agian) have to do is dl it and rename it to have a simple, workable, new base design. That would at least give us 3 new base acrhitechures to play with, pyrimids, cones, and sid, heck, maybe someonehas some other good base graphics they would like to share. Of coarse we would have the same firaxis faction icon and still have to look at sid's ugly mug
but the base graphics are the biggie. Maybe you could even make each avaliable with differnt unit colors, so all our new factions aren't the same color.
Just a randon, if frustrated, thought. Is this doable? Any takers? opionions? comments? Did I make any sense?
