  • No Aliens in random opponent selection!

    I don't want any Progenitor opponents, ever, but I also hate knowing who my opponents are going to be (or sometimes, who I'm going to play). How might I tweak the list of available factions?

    Since this is probably going to require taking the Aliens out entirely (not selectable or randomizable), is there also a way to just remove them from randomizing but still make them playable? I don't want to play against Lal if I AM Lal...

    Hello Glacialis,

    I'm not 100% positive this will work, but if you open your alphax.txt file and make the following changes, it may just achieve the desired results. Essentially open your alphax.txt file and scroll down about 95% of the way. You will find a Section labelled "#NEWFACTIONS", and will have the following format:

    #NEWFACTIONS
    CYBORG, CYBORG
    PIRATES, PIRATES
    DRONE, DRONE
    ANGELS, ANGELS
    FUNGBOY, FUNGBOY
    CARETAKE, CARETAKE
    USURPER, USURPER


    I'm not positive, but if you remove the last two lines from this Section (i.e. the CARETAKE and USURPER lines) and place these two lines back into the alphax.txt file under the #CUSTOMFACTIONS Section, you should be able to remove them from the "Random" selection process. To still be able to play these Factions, why I think if you copy and paste the two specified lines into the #CUSTOMFACTIONS Section, then you should still be able to choose the Progenitor Factions when selecting Factions from the list of available Factions to play for SMAX.
    Not 100% positive on all of this, but I believe this should work. FYI and hope this helps you out!

        According to the comment text in alphax, they're still avilable as random factions. I'll go and play a few games now and see what I come up with.

        Edit: Yikes! The executable wants SEVEN FACTIONS, no less...else it doesn't show the faction selection window and does really funky things that cause me to force quit it .

          Seems to me you might will need to replace those aliens with other two factions? Use ones from SMAC or custom-made ones?

            I suggest replacing them with custom made seafactions. That way you can play on smaller maps and have a random chance at still having enough land available for a decent sized faction.

                  I suppose I could put in custom factions, but that seems like a kludge. Right now I've duplicated two existing factions (Gaian/Uni) which so far has resulted in those factions being selected more often but no further changes.

                    That's why I suggest seafactions. Plenty to find at the Networknode.org site, and I have a few homemade as well, graphics based on those I found in the earlier mentioned site.

                      I've collected some cloned factions and aquatic factions here

                      (Also placed pdf copies of the smac and smax manuals for anyone who has lost them or bought the planetary pack that didn't have them}
