Playing with more than 7 factions?

Hello,

I recently started playing SMAX again. I prefer massive maps, and for additional challenge I would like to take the alien factions - however, this means two human factions are removed, which sucks.

I was thus wondering if there's some mod or workaround to enable playing with more than 7 factions?

There isn't.

I though I had heard you could play with more than seven, with the caveat that the interface would not support more than the default seven players (for example, the planetary elections screen).
