  • Reinstall problems...

Trying to reinstall the game I have screwed up big-time and I admit my fault, mea maxima culpa. I appear to have not uninstalled the game properly as I cannot now reinstall it.

I took the big risk for me of looking in my Registry but I can't see any residual sign of Firaxis but it is still there in Windows explorer. Obviously some uninstalled bit of the program is preventing a reinstall.

Before I just give up any advice any one would like to give which wouldn't threaten my XP OS would be welcome.

I guess I should just move on, great game that it once was in the days of Windows 95.

    Live long and prosper.

If some files remain in your Alpha Centauri folder, you can delete them manually. Just don't delete any other files or edit the registry.

If after doing so the game still refuses to reinstall, please post the exact text of any error message.

    Good Luck!

Any residuals in the registry will be overwritten during a successful reinstall, so I wouldn't fret over that.
Anything you might still find in Windows Explorer should be safe to delete. It's probably just a folder with something in it that the uninstaller couldn't remove. Do you see a folder called "Firaxis Games" in the Program Files folder? You can safely delete that if it still exists after running the uninstaller.
When you're ready to reinstall, restart your PC first, then do the install.
I am on a mission to see how much coffee it takes to actually achieve time travel.

Guys, I am so ashamed. I was lazy and just did a delete of folders not a proper uninstall.

When I tried the proper uninstall, it just wouldn't work.

Your sins shall find you out!

I shall let you know how I fare.

          Thanks, guys.

I have managed to re-install SMAC and SMAC-X, with MODs and the XP compatibility patch.

SMAC-X however just will not play. I get a "TerranX ICD error", whatever that means!

But I am in the early stages of a SMAC game which does work so I shall see how far that will go.

I am unfamiliar with that sort of problem I will direct petek here to see if he can offer any solutions though.
I got scolded in Bold letters by Iluminatus.
            That makes me sad. :(

I can't use smilies in my signature that makes me even more sad. :(

Cmcastl hasn't requested help with the terranx.icd problem. He's free to do so, of course.

Many thanks, Russia for Life, for your reply.

As I wrote, I seem to have successfully reinstalled SMAC and am in the early stages of playing it, though I don't know how far I shall manage to go. But I have NEVER managed to get SMAC-X to play under my OS, XP.

I could live without SMAC-X but previously I have never managed to play a large-scale map of SMAC under XP.

I have always had the "terranx.icd problem" trying to play SMAC-X under my XP OS but I could live with that, so long as I could play SMAC!

Okay, if you want help, here's an explanation and a suggestion:

Terranx.icd is actually the main executable file for SMAX. The function of terranx.exe is to invoke the copy protection and then hand over control to terranx.icd.

One way to avoid the terranx.icd crash is to run SMAX in compatibility mode. Sometimes it works, other times not. To run in compatibility mode, right-click the SMAX shortcut and select properties. Go to the compatibility tab. First try using Windows 2000 compatibility mode. If that doesn't help, try the other options.

                      K. I will try that, Petek. Thanks.

I had, of course, previously known about the compatibility program option but had thought that the XP compatibility patch was what solved playing SMAC-X.

                      We shall see.
