challenging non-modded scenarios

Why is it that just about every customized scenario requires installing a mod?

Since I'm using 64-bit Vista, ModMan won't run for me. Can someone quickly update me on challenging custom scenarios that don't require a mod? e.g. maybe one where my enemies start out strong (obviously past planetfall stage) and I am under immediate attack or something.

Try this one I found it pretty challenging at the start.
