  • In the years 2330s - crash with Data Angels

This is the second game I'm on after buying Alpha Centauri with Alien Crossfire from mastertronic. The first game I played I crashed on 2331, now I crashed on 2335, both with Data Angels, I don't know why.

You should post a save from your game so that we can see what might be wrong.

I don't know if there is a specific section for it so I just uploaded it to rapidshare:

      It's from 2335.

There has to be something else you did because using vanilla ACX exe I couldn't get it to crash. I just ended turn till about 2340 and game played fine. Have you installed all the patches and such properly?

I've installed Alpha Centauri, then the SMAC_Patch_v1.03f.exe patch tha comes with the CDs, then Alien Crossfire. I went to the Alpha Centauri.ini file and changed ForceOldVoxelAlgorithm=0 to ForceOldVoxelAlgorithm=1 to be able to play the game in XP.

          That's about what I did.

            Try applying ACX 2.0 update.

I updated it but it did not worked. The game still freezes, the music continues it just stands still and doesn't forward to the next turn.

Does the situation that you describe take place right at the point that you saved the game? If yes, then the turn isn't advancing because you still have units to move. Press the "V" key to locate unmoved units. If that's not it, then when does the game freeze and what steps do you take to get to that point?

If I get it right, then Dan_Grr is the owner of the newly released version - would it be out of order if I suggest that Dan uploads his version of terranx.exe at the same place where he posted the save ? That way scient maybe could reproduce the crash.

Well, if he installed the v2 patch it would have overwritten the exe. I'd recommend doing a clean install, check the version of exe by hitting ctrl-f4 in game. If it says v2, then only apply the 2000/xp update. If it's older then order of install should be first v2 patch then 2000/xp update.

He could just post the time stamp of when exe was created. According to updated FAQ, posting exe that hasn't be modified should be ok.

Thx scient - I've never figured out how to see the current version. Though, when I do it, I'm told that it's rel 2.0 20-dec-1999 and I have no problems using that on my pretty new dual core XP. I even run with the voxel set to 1 and don't get any questions about CPU.

Though, I have the planetary pack and that should as far as I know have sufficient upgrades built in for XP.

The way to tell if you have the 2000/XP patch installed is to see if your SMAC exe is ~3 mb. That's because it's not packed with safedisc. In the version info from ctrl-f4, it says v5 July 2002.

Not quite - my teranx.exe is 244 Kb but there is a terranx.icd at 3.005 Kb and I guess that they together make up the complete program (I'm a unix programmer and have only vauge knowledge about windows programs)

                            BC,

scient is talking about terran.exe, not terranx.exe.

Well, they have the same size.

Edit : small lie - the size of the icd files differ.
