Which of these messages did you get (if you remember)?

If it was the first, then it was the effect of your formers.

I'm surprised there was no message on the completion of the other condensors. Did all 8 squares surrounding the new condensors rise in moisture level?
Yes, as far as I can tell.

          • Hi all.
I got really into designing scenarios for smac until i discovered that espionage bonuses were all screwed up. Could I have a copy of the latest fixed .exe?

I looked at your save file. The problem appears to be caused by the Gaian Interceptor at coordinates (6, 10). If I delete that unit, the game proceeds without freezing. This problem is not the interceptor scramble bug. Since the game is freezing (i.e., becomes unresponsive) instead of crashing, the program may be going into an infinite loop. Scient found a similar situation involving automated artillery units. Only scient has the skills to analyze this any further. He's been offline for a while, but perhaps he'll look at it when he returns.

              • Scient,

I have been a player of Alpha Centauri since first it came out ten years ago. I just now picked the game back up after a 3 year hiatus and today learned of your efforts to balance and fix this game. OMFGWTFWOWBBQ <3's for you forever!!!!!!! and . I hope I can somehow help!!! Godspeed and whatnot.

                    • Many thanks for looking at this for me, Petek.

It seems to me IMHO that there needs to be a patch to expand the ability of SMAC to compute a bigger game with more units active than was envisaged when SMAC was designed for Windows 95/98. You can't blame the Firaxis designers for not envisaging the exponential rise in processing power.

I would love to be able to play this game through again. I do think it much more atmospheric than the cobbled-up CIV-4 version but for that to work a radical patch does seem to be indicated.

I think that your problem probably was caused by an automated unit going into a loop, not because you exceeded the game's limits. Check out the attached zip of a save file. The map is approx. twice the size of yours and has reached MY 2691 without crashing or freezing. Also, I'm currently playing a game on a map with dimensions 1024x2048.

I think you could blame them- computer power had been on that curve for twenty years already. I wouldn't blame them for not planning this far ahead, though.

                          • The buglist is reworked. Instead of fixed-based, I thought about making it origin-of-report based.
For now it contains bugs from SMAC Academy.

Some of them are already fixed. And as you may already know, this list (SMAC Academy) is also a list of undocumented features, etc. I added comments after each "bug," where I put my view on the item/issue. This is still for discussion, some items are controversial, and in some cases I was still not sure.
                            Please take a look.
There are still at least several "for sure" bugs, not in the patch.
Work in progress, I will be adding more reported bug lists/reports

                            • And right to start discussion, no. 2 is fixed and no.3 looks like a feature, then we have;
                              1) ability to grow above base size limit - wasn't fixed yet, I presume... then the code may lacking a check if the base can grow, when adding a colony pod. looks relatively easy to fix.

                              4) base for base trading. If AI can somehow properly determine how much a base is worth, maybe a bug is that it does not compare how much bases are worth. Might be difficult to correct. Some idea would be allow the trade only if AI gets a base with higher value. But then how you evaluate base worth according to location etc...

                              • I have something of a problem with your response, Petek.

Firstly, I have tried several games of both SMAC and Alien Crossfire under XP and always had these freezes.

Secondly, you say that there was one errant unit which caused the problem. I don't see how I could guard against that, unless...

There was a patch to expand the computing capacity of the program. I know I read somewhere that there is a problem with SMAC which needs to be patched with SMAC because it can't handle the increased computing power of modern computers and operating systems. That is what I am hoping and praying for.

But in any event, thank you kindly for taking the time to look at my problem, live long and prosper, Petek.
