Checking AC version?

I just reinstalled Alpha Centauri and Alien Crossfire last night, and then installed the patches found on the Fraxis site. The installer for the Crossfire patch gave an error, but I then installed the windows XP update.

I've read that installing the XP update will automatically update both the game and the expansion to the latest patch. Is this true?

Is there any way to easily check which version of the games I have? I can't seem to find any version numbers on the title screen like in other games.

Under Menu >> Help >> Show version number

SMAC should be 5.0, SMAX 2.0

Should the answer to FAQ 26 be updated to reflect that there are three patches available? (The individual SMAC 4.0 and SMAX 2.0 patches and the XP Update.)
