Troubleshooting Q

Hi guys, I wanted to play SMAC after a long time but ran into a little problem.

I recently got a new computer and installed the game, but it says something in the lines of 'your cpu is not supported for this game' during startup, then just crashes to desktop.

I've tried it with regular SMAC, both with and without the patch 4.0 installed
maybe alien crossfire would help but i can't find that cd anywhere for the moment, doubt that it would help anyway..

my system specs are:
Windows vista home premium
AMD athlon 64 X2 5000+
1 GB RAM
GeForce 8600 GT

is it a vista related problem or something maybe? I tried running the terran.exe in compatibility mode, but that didn't help either...

please help! I'd really like to give this great game another go! And thanks in advance

I'm not sure if I do anything wrong, but the alpha centauri.ini file is empty except for two lines, the title alpha centauri and a little arrow, like this:


[Alpha Centauri]




is this normal?

Edit the file, so it looks like this:

[PREFERENCES]
ForceOldVoxelAlgorithm=1
[Alpha Centauri]

... anything later ...
important is that the new entry is under Preferences, not alpha centauri

if it does not go try reinstall , it should work fine under vista

Doesn't work i'm afraid, I installed the XP patch and changed the alpha centauri.ini to

[PREFERENCES]
ForceOldVoxelAlgorithm=1
[Alpha Centauri]


but still crashes...

anything else??

Phenix,

In one of your posts you mentioned that your Alpha Centauri.ini file contained an arrow character. This suggests that either the file became corrupt, or that you didn't save it in a pure text editor (such as Notepad). To rule out either of these possibilities, delete your current .ini file, and then start the game again. This should create a "bare bones" .ini file. Then edit it in Notepad and save it. Start the game again and see what happens.

Thanks a lot, that vista-specific fix from the other thread with the compatibility administratior seems to have done the trick!
