  • Tutorial Scenarios Objectives

The Firaxis' tutorials '1Explore' and '3Conquer' have no specific info about what to do, when pressing the '=' key.

Instead a very brief summary goes like this:

    "
    Scenario Objectives

    Objectives needed for victory: x

Objectives needed for sudden death victory: x

    Objectives achieved so far: x
    "

Is it ok to be like this, since the '2Build' tutorial has detailed info on what to do?

That's strange. According to the text file in the scenario folders, the objective screens should have more information.

    For explore:

    #OBJECTIVES
    #xs 440
    #caption Explore & Expand
    ^
    1. Find and exterminate all three of the Mind Worms lurking nearby.
    ^
    2. Use a colony pod to build a base.
    ^
    Objectives needed for victory: $NUM0
    ^
Objectives needed for sudden death victory: $NUM1
    ^
    Objectives achieved so far: $NUM2
    ^

    For Conquer:

    #OBJECTIVES
    #xs 440
    #caption Gaian Conquest!
    ^
You have but one objective: seek out both Gaian bases to the north
    and conquer them!
    ^
^Gaian bases conquered so far: $NUM2
    ^

That's how it works in my game. Only the counting is a little bit odd. In the "explore" scenario, there are four "objectives needed" (3 worms + 1 new base I suppose), but I start with 1 "objective achieved so far" (which doesn't make sense). In the "conquer" scenario, I start with 1 "Gaian base conquered so far" which is incorrect and seems to be caused by Sparta Command being marked an objective.

Do you get "x"s or actual values on your objective screens? Do you get scenario introductions describing your objectives?

You could try replacing the #OBJECTIVES section of your scenario.txt files by the excerpts shown above (after making a copy of the original version to be safe). This will not work if there is a problem with the scenario (*.sc) file itself.

Having played the tutorial scenarios only once and the other scenarios not at all (hey, there is still some untouched content in SMAC after 10 years!), I am no scenario expert. Maybe one of our resident scenario
    designers can offer more help.

    Good luck!

      Thanks for the input.

After finding out that you can actually get a description for the '1Explore' tutorial, I compared the 'scenario.txt' file from the installed folder to that from the CD-ROM.

And they're different. The 'scenario.txt' files from the CD-ROM are working now (I get a text intro at the start of the scenario and I can see the detailed info on the objectives).

I definitely didn't tamper before with those text files.
Since the only thing I've done to SMAC was to install the XP updates, I presume those 'scenarios.txt' files got modified somehow during patching.

You are correct. I just checked and can confirm that the patch overwrites the original text files in the explore and conquer folders with a template file.
