  • Ways of dealing with Interceptor bug

    I've been finally hit with the interceptor bug. My question is what are some of the best ways to deal with it..

    I know I can open the editor and delete/move/do things to the interceptors themselves. But anyone have any good suggestions otherwise?

    Also.. how do I directly delete JUST the interceptors when they are positioned inside a base? I want to try to do this with the editor, but when I attempt it, I have to delete the units listed before the interceptors first.

    I am not an expert at the editor, unfortunately.

    I made an interesting discovery about the interceptor bug. If you look at this thread, you'll see that

    * BlackCat's game crashed when he attacked a Drone transport with his chopper.

    * My game didn't crash when taking the same action.

    * BlackCat deleted the interceptor, fixing the crash.

    Well, I loaded up this game again. Now the game crashes when I attack the transport! The difference? I bought a new system several months after the 2005 post.

    I tried several techniques (start in diagnostics mode, start in safe mode, turn on all compatibility options), but none of these prevented the crash. Maybe something will come to me overnight.

    As far as deleting units, I assume that you're trying to delete them from other factions. Right? One way to do so is to open the Scenario Editor and switch sides to the other faction. It's then easy to delete whichever units you like. Then switch back to the original faction

      I made some progress in fixing the "interceptor crash" in the save file referenced in my prior post. I found that if I changed the command

      WindowsFileBox=0

      in the Alpha Centauri.ini file to

      WindowsFileBox=1

      then the game crashed less often when attacking the Drone transport. Before making this change, the game always crashed at that point. Afterwards, it only crashes about half the time.

      Perhaps someone else reading this thread could make this change and report the result?

      BTW, the effect of the above change is to replace some of the custom SMAC/X dialog boxes with the standard Windows boxes.

        Interesting. I did just end up disbanding the problem units (interceptors).

        What a pain! I wish Firaxis would just release SMAX v 3.0 already

          I have always played with WindowsFileBox=1

          (I prefer working with the usual windows file system rather than Firaxis')

          I still get the crash from time to time, though. Interestingly enough when I reload from auto1, it doesn't always happen a second time.

          But now I am screwed - I bought a new rig, running vista, (and openorg instead of word, which wasn't pre-loaded) and can't seem to be able to edit the .ini file. It is annoying me in my few MP games as now I never know where the .sav gamefile is without long searches!!!

          ah well ................

            You should be able to open and edit the ini files in Notepad, which I believe comes with Vista.
