I subscribe to GameTap so I can play Myst Online: Uru Live, and I found that SMAC is now available to play on GameTap -- it's really revitalized my love for the game.

GameTap is a service where, for a $10/month fee, you can play hundreds of old and new games.

Hmmm. For $120/year you can buy a boatload of old games. Assuming you can find them, of course. The specter of $50+ for SMAX comes to mind.

It seems to me this would be a copyright violation unless they have an agreement with the owner.

According to Wikipedia:

"GameTap is a subscription-based video game service by Turner Broadcasting System (TBS)."

and the games are licensed from the owners. No Alien Crossfire, only Alpha Centauri, however.
