Thank you, Hydro, for including me in the list of those Giants of Yesteryear...I'm glad to see that the SMAX guide is still attracting attention after all this time. If I can ever get some free time again, I mean to continue my writing for Civ IV, but so far, the job and Candle'Bre are conspiring to keep me penniless, where spare moments are concerned.

Still, the things I am currently working on, I think you all will enjoy.

The list of published books grows. If you're curious to see what sort of stories I weave out, head to Amazon.com and do an author search for "Christopher Hartpence." Help support Candle'Bre, a game created by gamers FOR gamers. All proceeds from my published works go directly to the project.

I've never been an experienced player, hardly had even the time to play as much as I'd like...

Yet the game is #1 in my heart, and I keep checking here now and then to see what's going on.
It's sad to see the forum fade, somewhat. Hope in a new burst of interest someday: after all, the game is fascinating in a way that other games cannot even suggest.

Hey Archaic! Good to see you are still alive and online somewhere. Back from Japan, I take it (I'm way out of date)? I'm in Switzerland now, doing a postdoc. I know about the time lackage, and I seem to have more of it now I'm merely PAST the PhD stage. It gets easier.

Hello to you too, Vel. I've just got a bit more free time, and am getting into CIV a bit whilst it lasts. I'm just reading your CIV guide now, and whilst some of the tactics need to be adjusted somewhat to be applied to Warlords, it's terrific. It's of course the fundamental objectives of the early game that are most important, and even if the situation doesn't quite allow for one to follow your strats to the letter, they certainly get you thinking about what is really important to achieve early on. Your SMAC guide blows my mind still, but I never managed to get much of a group on the huge tactics that game allowed. CIV is, I believe a lot simpler, but even then your guide cuts straight to the point, and provokes the reader into thinking about how THEY could apply those tenets.

                So cheers for that.

I cannot fathom how, when mentioning giants of SMAC, anyone could forget Bing. Or korn469 for that matter. Or Tres, or Shining1 (for his SNAC mod), or Dilithium Dad - the list goes on...

                      Yeah, quite out of date. I got back in 2005. ^^;;
Damn, I couldn't even imagine doing post-doctorate. Oo;; Though it'd probably be less stressful than the mess I've got myself into at the moment. Doing my Masters by coursework, with 4 subjects for each semester, and I managed to get every single group assignment heavy subject in the first semester. 9 group assignments, 4 subjects, 13 weeks. Let's not forget individual end semester exams for each subject too.

                        ...

                        *sniff*

                        Yup, it's a touching reunion.

Man, it's great that people still remember the colossal waste of time that was my Fan Fiction for SMAX. I spent two years writing that thing, and when I finished, I was just about to start on my master's degree.

Now, I'm almost done with my first year of my third degree (a J.D. at law school). Maybe I should tickle the muse's boobs and see if I get enough inspiration to write something else. I've got two years between now and graduation anyway... This summer would be a good time, once exams are over.

Also, I need to rough up my cousin and force him to give back my SMAX CD

As far as the great giants of yesteryear, I can attest to Misotu as being a one-time top ranked SMAC player on these forums. I learned many amazing tactical strategies from her, and also got the opportunity to enjoy her finely honed sense of childish and jejune humor.

I played alongside her as the Hive and she was the University. At one point we started renaming landmarks around our empire, for no particular reason except for juvenile fun. She also pointed out the fact that ALINESTRA COVELIA is an anagram for VAIN CLITORAL EASE, which naturally and immediately went onto the map as a landmark, not far from the Monsoon Jungle. I suspect it confused the hell out of our opponents, Googlie and Redfred, when they stole our maps and discovered that stimulating landmark.

I think it was in that game too that I decided to rename my Rover prototype to "Gatling Interceptor" instead and I set a nearby base to build it. My ally saw my build queue and was momentarily stunned, thinking I'd somehow managed to get to Air Power already, before I confessed it was just a normal rover. How we laughed.

Misotu also was the one who taught me how to build Sensor Arrays on a square before building a base on it, for a cheap (and not entirely ethical) unremovable defense bonus!

Strangely, Misotu physically moved to live in Britain from America at almost the same time I physically moved to live in America from Britain. Our accents must be really arsed up by now

Googlie and Redfred also were tactically advanced players with a strong sense of punctuality and professionalism in playing. They also stuck with a one-year-long PBEM with the likes of me and Misotu, so they're evidently fairly patient

Vel is likewise awesome. His strategy guides are very well researched and lots of fun to read. I need add no more here because everybody else concedes his osimosity.

Hydro holds down the fort as far as fiction goes. He's the type who will play the game and get a quirky idea and before you know it, there's a nifty short story exploring the concepts on the boards.

I know there are others I've missed but for now I need another martini so I can continue behaving badly. Just be thankful there isn't a "mooning you" smiley. This will have to do:

Thank you for that contribution Alinestra Covelia.

It adds to my knowledge of yesteryear.

I looked up stats on players and noted that Misotu was a frequent winner but also had a female perspective on things.

I would love to have played a MP SMAC with her and others.

The trouble with fighting for human freedom is that one spends most of one's time defending scoundrels. For it is against scoundrels that oppressive laws are first aimed, and oppression must be stopped at the beginning if it is to be stopped at all.
