Oh yeah.
There was talk about a single player game (weren't you in favour of one IIRC?), but it never got off the ground. There aren't enough active people anymore. SMAC is dead. Long live Civ4!

Well, Civilization 4 isn't too bad of a successor to the activity of SMACX. Though it isn't quite as great, it incorporates many concepts in a fun way (unlike Civ3).
For the record, don't expect the C4DG team to be very active either.
I blame:
1. Civ4 being a much slower paced game than SMAC. Civ4 you can't win in hundred turns. => less stuff to discuss per turn.
2. The high number of teams => slow turn around...
I tried C4 for a while. When it wasn’t crashing my PC (all fixes didn’t work, with an unpleasant number of blue-screens-of-death) or slowing it to a bloody crawl starting at midgame I found that C4 was mildly entertaining. But in the end it lacked flavor. Every race seemed so similar that I didn’t really care which one I tried – all that differentiated them was a special unit or ability (**yawn**). The only interesting bits were lifted from SMAC. Well, that's not quite true - I did like the C4 music.
C4 is now shelfware for me, while SMAC/X continues to be interesting after 7 years. Quite amazing, really. It’s too bad C4:SMAC didn’t work out.
I still like Civ4 and the music is at least part of the reason. Some of it may even be too beautiful to use as background music. I'm looking forward to the orchestral arrangement of "Deidre's got a Network Node" in the next SMAC version.
