  • Demogame proposal: start on the Unity

    You're a Unity crewmember.

    You're off-duty.

You pass a bar on the Unity and you see a group of Unity crewmembers having an animated discussion about Chiron.

    You join the conversation.

(This is the start of the formation of a faction, name to be determined. The group is familiar with the original 7 SMAC leaders and their ideologies. If, after a lot of discussion, we can get ten players interested, we would ask Iluminatus to appoint a CMN to:

    * create a faction based on the discussion and balanced with the original 7 SMAC factions

    * create a game, making all the rule choices

    Then we would play.)

I've heard Lal. He's too bureacratic for my tastes. He's too focused on maintaining the status quo.

We're approaching an alien planet. We need a new appoach.

I guess you're right... but from the death of captain Garland everyone has gone mad. I don't like the ideas of Yang and I'm affraid that without Lal our mission will turn into bloodshed. We should try to avoid it at all cost!

Lal is erratic. He'll spill blood for his precious UN.

What about Deidre or Morgan. They're pacifists!

Nwabudike Morgan, grand pacifist. Thanks to him the fuel cells were filled to the brims; although with nuclear reaction mass rather than all spilled blood that paid for it. If we let him determine humanities fate it will not be long until we are brutally killing each other for a few gasps of polluted air and a single gulp of diseased water.

Human behavior is economic behavior says Morgan. But that kind of thinking can be destructive, we will be a small vonurable community on Chiron, we need a survivalist movement of some kind. But those paramilitarists are barley any better than the Eurabic terrorists we left behind in sol.

Assuming we do not all go crazy, those sandal wearing freaks in the greenhouses may have the right idea. Some of them were part of the colectivo de naturaleza centroamericano during the Consolidation conflicts. They know when and how to use a gun.

I don't know about you guys, but I firmly believe that knowledge is power. When we arrive on Chiron new and old technology will be the only thing that will help us in ever single endeavor whether it be terraforming or defense, I'm giving serious thought to joining Zak's group, working under the guy can be straining, but the things we do are just remarkable.

Sure you can say that technology and science can't solve all our problems, but look around yourself, they saved us in the end.

If used responsibly technology can be sustainable. However I think we are overestimating what will be required to sustain ourselves on Chiron. Pretty soon the question will not be survival but prosperity.

*finishes his Unity brew as all of us contemplate that thought*

Vyeh, what were those population estimates put out by Yang's think tank? One million colonists born by MY 2170?

Vyeh: That was assuming no growth limits and maximum levels of fertility among the women. Most of the estimates have put a successful one million mark around 2270.

Exactly, we will be able to expand easily well before that point. A planet nearly size of Earth with even 1/10th of Earth's resources would seem an infinite well to a population that size with advanced technology. We cannot repeat the tragedy of greed that infected the Earth in its industrial revolution and led to its current demise.

I didn't notice that. Well the thread was before its time.

I’m not in the mood for history, but I’ll have you know that there wes nothing wrong with the industrial revolution, what would have been the alternative? The time of wasted opportunity was during the golden age /1950-2010/, just a few minor resource wars barley 30 or so million dead in all the conflicts during that time, no use of nuclear weapons, pretty good times. Sure 5 billion people lived in poverty but we all know how much worse things got after that. That was paradise. All the fools would have needed to do was recycle a bit, drive electric cars and use nuclear power for all their electricity needs, while spending more resources on the research of fusion power.

Well either that or learn to get along. But the second notion is utopian.

Speaking of the enviroment, the Gaians seem interesting. For now they seem normal greens, but I have a bad feeling they will just degenerate into a pseudo-pagan cult when they land on Chiron.
