Arg! How does it always work out that evil corporations like EA own what is one of the few, true works of art in the video game world? EA is like the Wal-Mart of the video game industry. If there isn't a sufficiently high price to earning ratio, the game will just never be made. It will be shelved like so many great movie scripts because they don't meet mass market appeal.

Well thanks Illuminatus, you just crushed what little hope I had for a sequel. And all because you had to educate me! How dare you! Next time leave me in the ignorant bliss of the pipe dream! Allow my denial to fester like kimchi in my skull! *cry*

The default will be SMAX. To kill two birds (you and Laz) with one stone I'll probably make the SMAC version starring the Hive. FYI.

looking forward to it even more now
Learn to overcome the crass demands of flesh and bone, for they warp the matrix through which we perceive the world. Extend your awareness outward, beyond the self of body, to embrace the self of group and the self of humanity. The goals of the group and the greater race are transcendant, and to embrace them is to acheive enlightenment.

Indeed. Most of my favorite games haven't sold well (SMAC, Planescape: Torment). It must a be variant of Murphy's law.

Ignorance is bliss, what can I say. I thought for a long time that Firaxis retained some of the rights but no. Our best hope would be if Firaxis/2K games would reaquire rights from EA. It certainly does seem the Firaxis is interested in that, judging from little hints here and there.

Oh and I don't hope for sequel; streamlining SMAC like they did for Civ4 would eliminate many game mechanics just because AI couldn't use them. I don't think they would be able to repeat the magic even if BHG and Firaxis colaborated.

No, just too many stupid people in this world who can not handle neither delayed gratification nor anything that requires them to stop any think. Too many versions of 'online wack-a-mole' games being made.

Well maybe the same distain for the TBS genre will make getting those rights easier for Firaxis

Yeah, but the SMAC crowd is a little different than the Civ crowd. The Civ crowd has a lot more casual gamers that are the main drive for simpleton games. Personally, I believe you can cater to both hardcore and casual gamers at the same time with a TBS game. Design a game which appears simple on the surface, but to win at the higher levels you must involve yourself in greater amounts of the detail. Kind of an extension of the governor idea. Sure, you could win SMAC using nothing but governors and automated units...as long as you played on the lowest level. But you could not get away with that kind of inefficiency on Transcend.

No idea if anyone remembers me o_O

Nor do I have any idea why i'm posting in such a nostalagic thread when I should be packing for college

I just had to follow my own instructions from an ancient thread concerning game resolution size. (Now playing at 1650x1050 on my shiny new laptop )

Maybe I'll do multiplayer someday... And then proceed to flunk out of college. (Nuclear and/or Mechanical Engineering).

                Ya...
I once was a slave to the Alderbaran 2 project!
Now I shall work towards cIV:AC!... Oh Wait, that's dead too...

I think I vaguely remember you-- If smax had existed when was in college, I WOULD have flunked out.

But in that prehistoric age, people rarely had laptops and the internet we know today, did not really exist

I'm also the insane guy perfectly spacing his bases and covering the world with Condensers (and then rivers, and then bunkers....)

Oh and the Centauri Ecologies or whatever... Build so many till they negate and planet damge I cause... Kudos to whoever discovered that bug.

It still exists, but with more variety.

I know its summer and this is an "older" game but it seems like this is the fewest threads I have ever seen in this forum. Since it appears that an inactive forum gets "consolidated", we may have to "use it or lose it".

Have we discussed everything in so much depth that there is little left to say? I can hardly believe that.

There continue to be newbs and I cannot believe they are picking up everything from the archives. Or is it the very inactivity that makes people less likely to post a thread?
Strategy discussion is ussualy generated by trying to devise new ways to defeat someone-the AI or human opponents-or to be playing at a higher level of skill. The AI is so weak that its really not a problem, and less pbems are being played, meaning less competition. With people more interested in playing along than trying to devise creative ways to win, gradual slowing of the posting can be expected. Most of the core of skilled players has either left or stopped playing extensivly and the remainder would be hardpressed to generate interest without something new.

Another thing that has caused me to withdraw from almost all strategy game discussion(on any board) is, IMHO, i have somewhat mastered or at least focused on ''general game theory'' as opposed to focusing on one game. For example i played civ4 at a high level of difficulty when i first played, by applying general 4xing strategy. Other games by starting your first few games at the hardest possible allows rapid adaption to the game, quickly being able to pwn the AI, while taking a few losses while 'adapting'-i started civ2 and smac at deity\transcend for example. I became active on these forums mostly because the multiplayer was so different, so i needed others experiance and knowledge to catch up. Im not really interested in posting about it extensivly now. If asked, i share what i know the best i can, however im not good at teaching so i havnt posted alot.

Others may see things completly differently, of course.
