My handle was Anunikoba for the longest time, but I don't use that online anymore.

Didn't you change your name also? I think we may have played a PBEM together one year. Unless I'm thinking of someone else.

Ahh In that case I remember you quite well-- I was "cbn" for a short time ( about a year IIRC) and I changed my name when I moved since my new computer didn't have the cbn password info.

WE played at least one and perhaps two PBEMs-- the details are fading but ya you were a vet of this game years ago-- welcome back

For myself, I have a better job that keeps me more busy than I used to be. So I don't come around often anymore. When I do, I just lurk. I still love the game and play it a 2-3 times a week. I suppose I could learn more, but since I still only play single player (yes, I actually enjoy single player still), the scope of tactics is limited. I largely play "Squeeze more blood from the turnip" type games.

Even though I do not play multiplayer, it would be a huge shame to lose this forum. I've been to a lot of forums, and this one still has the highest quality people I have ever encountered (both in helpfulness and personality). It is nice to come back after several months and still see familiar names.

I do agree what we need is a injection of new blood. As good as it is, the game needs a revamp. Unfortunately, I don't see Fraxis being that agent of change. Since they own the rights to the SMAX universe, I am afraid that a proper sequel will manifest itself as another game with a similar story and game design.

I believe there is an increasing market for lower intensity games. When my wife goes out, and I have to watch the kids, I can not devote my attention to a FPS. I need a game which I can drop in an instant and come back to an hour later. SMAX is a perfect game in that respect. As gamers become older, more family orientated, either the game industry will have to adapt, or smaller niche companies will spring up to sell to that market. Along these lines, the original MMORPG crowd (not the new WoW crowd) has grown disillusioned with games that require sacrificing your real life for the game.

I doubt TBS games will ever be huge. You'll never see Sony getting in the business (thank the cosmic-muffin), but a resurgence is not out of the question. Hopefully Fraxis, or even better Brian Reynolds, will realize there is something more here than a bunch of fanboys that can't let go of an old game. Then maybe there will be a rebuild of SMAC with the original principles in mind.

While I'm skeptical that Firaxis will actually act on the information, it's clear that Alien Crossfire is the most popular of their underdog franchises. My big worry is that IF SMAX is ever reissued, that its complexity and gameplay will take the same sort of turn that was taken in Civ3, namely, gutting complexity and introduction of seesaw mechanics designed to make the paper tiger AI less toothless.

You are probably (unfortunately) right. Which why I believe an appropriate sequel would come from another game studio. From someone that is a fan of the game that got tired of waiting for other people to make the sequel. I keep hoping someone in one of these 'game colleges' picks this up as a long term project and it takes off.

Speaking of which, has Reynolds been asked recently if he has entertained the idea of doing another TBS?

First off, has anyone tried the Networknode link lately? I've been trying it the last few days, but to no avail.

Second, as far as discussing everything is concerned, why the thought occured to me this evening that one of the things I haven't done is solicited feedback/ thoughts as far as other people's ideas regarding what they might like to see in an SP Challenge. What with all the grizzled veterans who visit these boards I'm sure there must still be some excellent ideas out there that people feel should be incorporated into an SP Challenge, but haven't been to date. So if you've had an idea that you think would fit well into an SP Challenge then post it here, and I'll see if I can mesh it with the other ideas I still have floating around.....

Both of you are wrong. Firaxis doesn't own rights to SMAC or SMAX, Electronic Arts does. If they had the rights they would probably be working on a sequel/remake.

Learn to overcome the crass demands of flesh and bone, for they warp the matrix through which we perceive the world. Extend your awareness outward, beyond the self of body, to embrace the self of group and the self of humanity. The goals of the group and the greater race are transcendant, and to embrace them is to acheive enlightenment.

Well, actually my next SP Challenge is Believers. However if there is enough interest then I can also set it up as a Hive scenario, as they would also "fit" well into the "situation" I've created for this game.

I've not become one of the most regular because I don't play that much.
...and, because I never do Multiplayer games, and I understand this means losing much from a game like this.

Anyway, I did a "break" to play Starcraft, which I consider one of the two best strategy games, along with AC
Two days ago, I started a new transcend game with University, and found myself trying Free Market for the first time!
Guess there is still a lot to play for one like me, in theory at least

Darnsan - Believer, eh? I’ve never played Believers. Too…icky. Whenever I see Miriam I hear strains of “Onward Christian Soldier...” and “Praise the Lord, and pass the hand grenades.” I guess I hold it against Miriam that she’s the one that PBs me the most (in MP and SP). Yes. Flubber is playtesting for me right now. Probably spin it once more with his feedback and then release. Say about a week. Since your one of the best creative writers around would you be interested in going over the prelude I've written for this game? I'd appreciate the feedback if you could do this for me.

This is actually a Splinter Faction of the Believers. The game takes place on a planet called Eye in MY2500.

Well, look at the bright side: since you'll be playing the Believers you won't have to worry about her nuking you then, will you?

                                Darsnan,

Sure! Just give me the parameters, any thoughts on mood, length etc and I can get something turned around fairly quickly. My keyboard (I was going to say pen, but I haven't written anything with a pen in 20 years) has been feeling a bit neglected, so here's the chance to make amends.
