I think the AI can trigger the volcano event with their pollution. I remember a game where Yang a volcano that I didn't trigger ended up connecting Yang's territory to mine.

Well, I know I've played SMAX too much then, because I've had a meteor crush my capital before. Twice. Once when playing as Morgan (of course) and another time playing Dee. The first time, I lost like every SP in the game (I was playing at Thinker back then) and the second, I think I lost like 1/3.
In both cases, moving my capital and rebuilding those bases was a pain, but not really that tough, just a few turns of focussed terraforming, followed by a quick Pop boom, and they're back where they started. The SPs were lost forever, unfortunately.

I would suspect it is . . . .If you want a volcano-- pollute moreYou don't get to 300 losses without being a pretty exceptional goaltender.-- Ben Kenobi speaking of Roberto Luongo

It was just a grazing shot though - one of my sea bases got a couple of extra land tiles where I could dig another hole

It can severely hamper the style of your port city especially if you have ships in dock at the time. I wasn't best pleased...
I did have an asteroid strike when I first started playing Alpha.
It took out the Merchant Exchange, Longevity Vaccine and the Supercollider a host of groovy units and crawlers and so forth
My cha was never quite so grinned....
I've had Mount Planet erupt too, if I recall aright. I still have a fondness for building bases in the crater....Vive la liberte. Noor Inayat Khan, Dachau.

Asteroid strikes base: this never occurs before turn 75, and only if the base's faction is in first place. it destroys everything nearby, including the base itself, and makes a new "crater" a la Garland Crater
and
Volcano erupts: If base is near a volcano, the volcano erupts (but no effect before turn 75). This never happens unless the base's faction is in first or second place. It destroys all terrain enhancements and severy reduces the populations of all bases near the volcano
(note the latter's referenec to "If a base is near ..."
this is 'cos every turn the computer selects a base, and then rolls a dice to determine that random event. Some events never happen 'cos of lack of qualifier (eg, not enough turns elapsed, the chosen base is an HQ base (for some events), the base isn't big enough, there are no nessus mining colonies, there are no satellites, etc etc. So the events are "base diven" (each base is give a number, from 1 to 99, and the computer then selects from that range. if there are 600 bases per faction, then only the first 99 in establishment order (all factions) are eligible for the 'event" to hit

I've built a base there in Alien Crossfire. Sometimes you can, sometimes you can't.
I had a lovely island erupt right close to my main island which proved very useful for an energy park for the adjacent Merchant Exchange base.
It's partly why I love this game so much- all the groovy little unexpected occurrences, sometimes good, sometimes bad. Like scooping up distant pods in the ocean- will it be a Mk II Ogre ? A clone of your foil ?
Or an isle of the deep with severe fungal itching ?Vive la liberte. Noor Inayat Khan, Dachau.
