  • Volcano!

Hm, as I was playing University yesterday, I had something happen for the first time. A volcano erupted, and a small island with a second Mount Planet appeared. Fortunately, it was far away from any of my bases. Has anyone actually had a messier volcanic eruption? Does it destroy cities?

It does not destroy bases, and yields the same benefits Mount Planet does - it is more of a blessing than a curse.

What I have yet to see is the "meteor impact", that one is supposed to be a major disaster.

      Not messing up bases?

WOW Those are some pretty sturdy things! And yeah, it's definately a blessing rather than a curse then.

Is the meteor impact a result of pollution and the retaliation of Planet? Man, I can just see Morgan laughing about how his legions of formers and mercenaries take care of fungus and worms and Planet can't do crap and then look at the big rock coming down and going.

Then again, knowing Morgan's own brand of bloodymindedness, he would probably find a way to profit from it.

A blessing . Not when you had a seabase surrounded by tidal harnesses and suddenly find yourself on a naked rock. Those things destroy all terraforming in the area.

The only meteor impact I've ever heard is the one that destroys all orbital mining stations, just like solar flares destroy power transmitters and ODP's.

It's just a few former turns... would you rather not get it?

You are probably talking about this one:

Major Asteroid Strike on Nessus Prime! All Nessus Mining Stations

          I meant this other:

A meteor impact is a random event that is not very likely so you can go many games without seeing one. It seems like it is most likely to kill the largest and most developed base of the leading player. I don't recall any defence to it other than turning random events off before you start ( which I recommend in all PBEMs)

I've only had one planetside meteor impact, but it totally wiped out a fully-developed base. Left nothing but a big crater. I've had several volcanos erupt, though. I can recall at least one that erupted right under a sea base that I had. Didn't damage the base, but I didn't have any terraforming around it, so I can't speak to that.

Oh wow . #EATTHIS - .I've never seen this in all 7 years I've been playing.

Meh, by the time volcanos start to appear the mainland is already fully terraformed the way I want (full of boreholes). That's quite a few terraformer turns and tons of resources pouring into my bases every turn. What's so great about volcano within base radius in a mid/late game anyway?

Oh, it happens...But, it only happens when the lead player has a 'massive' lead on the rest of the game...

I had it happen to me twice in six years...Both times, I'd concentrated most of my SPs in a few cities. I was in the midst of a war with the Hive and Sparta, I was playing the University...

Then, this large 'rock' falls out of the sky, taking out University Base, the Virtual World Project, Cloud Based Academy and the Longevity Vaccine. Suddenly, most of my bases are rioting, my troops are getting massacred due to lower morale and drop troops are landing 'everywhere'.

This is not a random event you should hope for. But, on the positive side, it can turn a cake-walk into a real struggle to survive....

I've only had a meteor impact happen once in all my years playing SMAC. It wiped out my best base (with the HSA, no less!) It also threw up global haze clouds that lowered global energy production by 1 per square for 10 years, if I remember correctly.

But yeah, volcanoes are more common, especially if you have lots of ecodamage going on. They can be a blessing or a curse. It depends.

Volcanos erupt in SMAC?? This must be a very rare occurance indeed. I must´ve played the game hundreds of times, nothing like this has ever happened.

How is your ecodamage rate usually running? If you pollute enough, it will be evry likely to happen

Aw i want a meteor, ive never seen it either
Learn to overcome the crass demands of flesh and bone, for they warp the matrix through which we perceive the world. Extend your awareness outward, beyond the self of body, to embrace the self of group and the self of humanity. The goals of the group and the greater race are transcendant, and to embrace them is to acheive enlightenment.

Make sure random events are on and make sure not to win too quickly-- you might need to senslessly play for a few turns after you could have transcended but if you go deep into the game, my experience (anecdotal not tested) is that it becomes more likely

I don't ever remember getting a meteor in the first 100 years-- perhaps it can happen but I'm not sure

                              Ypi probably win too fast
