Miriam's backstory has no relation to reality. It merely illustrates the authors' paranoia regarding Christianity. Miriam does not act in accordance with any modern branch of Christianity. Current trends in Christianity do not lead towards Miriam. The most the Christian right wishes to impose upon you is its defenition of human life and its defenition of marriage. Nobody has proposed criminalising sin. Nobody has proposed burning evolutionary biologists at the stake. If you want something to fear fear islam or fear secular totalitarianism, because nobody else is in the business of theocracy anymore.

Funnily enough theres an errant "Christian Science" guy doing his annual lecture at my university today on how biblical creation must be correct.

Indy, thought disturbing, thankfully those kind of people are unlikely to achive power in a democratic society. Long may it remain so.

As for Miriam's purpose in SMAC, remember that the Lord's Believers began life as the Conclave and had their own Bible. I don't think they really reflect any of Firaxis opinions on christians, just theocratic societies.

That old argument again. Miriam is not supposed to represent Christianity but fundamentalist ideology just as Yang is not supposed to represent communism but totalitarian ideology. Firaxis just made a nice twist by giving their fundamentalist faction a background as a fictional radical Christian denomination.

Anyone who enjoys a nice science fiction read should have already noticed that USA transforming into a theocracy is a recurring motive in "future" histories (besides annexing Canada ).

Miriam's backstory has no relation to reality.

Of course it doesn't. It is a work of fiction.

I – Canada was annexed a while ago. Or didn’t you notice?

N and K – you are correct that most Christians are perfectly happy to mind their own business and live in peace with their neighbors. It is the extremists (far right evangelicals and fundamentalists) that seem to spew the most hate (Jerry Falwell and Pat Robertson come to mind) and who would just love to force the rest of us how to live according to their progressive 5th Century BCE interpretation of Christian morality (which is strangely similar to the morality of the Taliban or Wahabists in Saudi Arabia – maybe they’re related?).

As for those pesky evolutionary biologists and geologists, they’ll just be fired – a different and more merciful sort of burning at the stake.

My comment refers to Old Testament morality: tooth for a tooth, smite thy enemy, enslave or exterminate the locals, give your daughter to be ravished by the a mob to save a male stranger - all the enlightened fare from the more sordid parts of the common tradition of Earths monotheistic faiths. It makes for rather difficult reading when viewed through values crafted by the Enlightenment, or even most of the New Testament.
