  • I shot myself -- twice!

So there I was, playing Yang. If I remember all the conditions correctly, I was planetary governor, at war with Lal and Miriam, pacted with Santiago, and treatied with Diedre after a pretty drawn-out conflict. I don't recall what UoP was doing, but I think Morgan had been eliminated. I had several Missile Cruisers and Missile Destroyers roaming the oceans.

Two of my Missile Cruisers/Destroyers (I don't know which) cruised past a spit of land & I decided to bombard. As I'd never bombarded an unopened unity pod before, I decided to try it. Next thing I know, we've got the sounds of battle, but on the readout at the bottom of the screen, I've got two pictures of Yang, and two descriptions of my boat! Apparently, my boat was powerful enough to destroy itself, because that's exactly what it did. At first I thought, "maybe that's just what happens when you bombard unity pods." So I chalked up the lost ship to experience and moved on. But then, later, I tried to bombard a kelp farm and the same thing happened!

Anybody know what went on there? Is this a known bug? An "undocumented feature?" Were my ship captains just incredibly incompetent?

Your captain is probably sane buthis commander - well Haven't experienced this - it seems that there still are explorable features after all these years .

I've never seen this before, but is this in your/unclaimed land? I think the problem (may) be that the ship is bombarding, and then defending the square (arty units will normally defend open squares from bombards), though I haven't seen a unit attack itself, I have often seen native spore launchers attack eachother

It wasn't my land, but I think it was unclaimed land. I had just invaded/destroyed a Peacekeeper base just off its coast.

On a sidenote, I've discovered the benefits of bombarding recently...

Not on land, but at sea... Bombarding Sea Formers destroys them automatically, and I no longer fear losing cruisers to foils...If I lack the spaces to reach the enemy foil or cruiser, I just Long Range fire on them...

Even if adjacent you should always consider the benefits of the arty duel to the death of shipping. Often the AI will build a ship like a 1-3-4. It makes no sense to direct attack this ship when you can bombard it with far less damage.

The reality is that neither a 4-1-4 or a 1-3-4 is very survivable alone since each is VERY vulnerable to the right type of attack. Thats why a navy either has to start going with best-best configurations OR start stacking high armour with high weapon ships. For a number of reasons I prefer the latter option

then why is it any time I attack an ai's 1-3-4 with long range it defends with 3, the only advantage I've seen is that against caretakers they don't get the +25% defence bonus, but they still defend w/ 3, even long reanging a 4-1-4 (I did it out of curiousity of course) the defend w/ 1, land attacking sea does normal arty combat though

huh --- That is the opposite of my experience as I recall it. I can remember the joy the first time I realized my 2-1-4 could long range and win easily against a similar morale 1-3-4

I'll have to retest to ensure my recollection is not faulty but I seem to recall doing a test with multiple ships on this

Arty boat bugs are awesome/i think D had a -100% rush factor too

one bug i think should be in the game normally is when a probe unit attacks a transport and intiates combat with a loaded probe. marines saw that last fall

It sounds like Yang's navy needs to lay-off the engine room hooch.
I haven't seen this bug yet, but I have seen yang nuke one of his own bases, and I've seen a flying mind worm boil.

I remember the first time I accidentally nuked myself by hitting a hidden worm in the fungus outside my headquarters...

I was playing Fungus Boy and was busily planting fungus, and I didn't pay much attention to what I was doing when moving a PB to one of my outlying military outposts...Passed by the capital, 'Mind worm spotted!', accidentally hit the arrow button once more...

                      Oops...

Lost the Virtual World, Command Nexus and Cloud Base Academy all in one swoop...Made the game a bit more interesting for about a while, though...
