  • Smac/x's Amazing Ebay Prices

I was browsing over at Ebay second hand copies of SMAC and SMAX and the cheapest were around 100 USD being the average 140 USD.

And these weren't the boxed games, they were the planetary pack and in some cases even unboxed !!

Has anyone seen any other PC game which has reached such high prices over time ?

SMAC is like £2 from ebay. It's SMAX that is expensive.

Maybe I should sell my copies of SMAX. I have two, that'd be at least £100. I want to hold on to the CDs though, incase something happens to my computer.

Yeah, I managed to get SMAC for £0.50 on eBay (UK) last year.

SMAX seems to go for about £30 or so whether it's the Planetary Pack or the stand-alone version. I've seen Americans buy them too.

I doubt you'd get anywhere near £100 for it Humphrey. You'd need a reserve and a lot of luck?

Managed to snap-up a copy of the PP on a Buy-it-Now for under a tenner, but the CD had a read error on it! Got it fixed though now.

When I last looked, a couple of weeks ago, all the smax copies were £70+, so getting £100 for 2 would be possible, I think. I don't want to sell them though, my copy I have had since before launch day (was a review copy) and I don't think my girlfriend would be impressed if I sold her copy.

              Wow, cool!

Your GF plays too! Best I can get my wife interested in on the PC is Scrabble.

BTW, How do you manage the tech tree charts? I'm scared the damn things are gonna fall apart.

Got some .pdf and .doc versions but they're difficult to get an 'overview' of unlike the printed ones.

There are some on nethogs game pages that are printable.

I hear say that anyone that wants smax can just stick their hand into the wind at any random smax forum on a odd day of the week and it falls right into their hands amazing isnt it? probably just a myth though...

I presume you mean the smac_ref_mtl_101.pdf one?

If so, it's a beautiful piece of work but by the time you zoom in to make the text readable you've lost the 'overview' again.

Don't know if my printer can handle that sort of file but it's probably the closest you can get to the original anyway.

Kataphraktoi: When you say full-sized, how big is e.g. Page 1 (The SMAC tech-tree)?

I've looked at it 100% in .pdf and Powerpoint and it looks a garbled mess! I gotta zoom in to about 200% before the text becomes legible!

I think an A4 sheet is less than the size of a 17" monitor.

                      Help!!!

Well i have to resize it too but it prints fine. I just popped it up in powerpoint(openoffice) and resized to 200% and its not messed up at all.

Well, well... just printed out Page 1 on 'Standard' on my crappy ole Canon and it was almost readable. Tried it on 'High' and it's perfectly legible even with my old eyes!

Can now put away the original tech trees back in the boxes!

Thank you so much for pointing this out Kataphraktoi .

The link if anyone's interested is here btw:

Does anyone know a better/cheaper way/place to get a copy of SMAX?

I almost got it (SMAC+X, CDs only) on ebay a few days ago. I got outbid almost at the last moment at £22, and unfortunately I found another offer (SMAX with manual + poster, £20) that was soon to expire, and went for that instead. (Which someone else got for over £60)

Sounds like Firaxis could have some profit from releasing some more of this superb game..
