I've heard a lot of good things about the music from SMAC, but unfortunately my CD of the game is defective and wont play any of the sounds. Does anyone know where I can get hold of uncorrupted music files?

The music of SMAC is not worth bothering with. Its an interesting technical achievement since its made from isolated notes stored in some sound folder and put together in various different ways for the different factions. It also varies depending on what you're doing in-game. When you achieve a victory or build a new base it will suddenly pick up from the normal background ambient sounds to something more lively/martial.
However, Civ4 level its not. It would be difficult to compete with composers whos work is remembered over hundreds of years. -
