    Hmm. I see.

Which, of course, brings up the question of how canon the GURPS book is.

So is Ely's story about the Unity's voyage. And people got a few problems with that one too.

Your point? Canon is not what fans consider to be true but what is closer to origin of the fictional universe. All great franchizes have hundreds of problems with their canon - just look at Star Trek, Star Wars, Stargate, comics etc,

The only "true" canon is ingame information and after it, Ely's stories. And then comes GURPS Alpha Centauri. Each of them expands and clarifies the previous information, and does not contradict it (except in the case of Santiago's rank which is differently stated in game and some details). Everything other is fanon.

After all, nobody forbids you to percieve a faction differently.

Just out of passing interest (and since im never going to read his books) could you provide a summary of the action and develpements in Elys books? I'm not asking for an essay- just a quick summing up.

            Thanks in advance.

And that's where the problem comes in. In-game, the Spartans suffer no growth penalties. If it's Spartan policy to commit infanticide you'd expect a starting Growth of -1 or something (since Growth seems to represent the mature civilians or the workforce - unless babies turn out to be highly adept at working boreholes).
Or perhaps the Spartans are just breeding like rabbits to compensate, which doesn't really sound like the Spartans either.

Furthermore, by killing the unfit early on, you'd expect the Spartans to have less drones. Granted, the Spartans do have less drones, but that's because of the higher Police rating, not because it's 'built-in' like with the Free Drones or the University.

In-game you have 10,000 citizens immediately after Planetfall although landing pods carry only about 1000 people - fast breeding indeed. In-game, population can grow within several turns if it has enough nutrients for growth - seems babies can work boreholes). Further on, in-game you can raise mountains out of nowhere. In-game you can hurry facilities no matter how incomplete they are provided you have enough money. In-game Gaians or Hive do not suffer and modification to base limits, although they do build bases in special conditions. And so on. Game does not reflect story canon or reality perfectly, it is balanced according to gameplay.
