  • Battle Ogres...

So... do Battle Ogres occur naturally in SMAX, or are they restricted to the Progenitor factions? It suddenly occured to me, that in over a year of playing SMAX, I have never captured or found a Battle Ogre in the "wild". And hell, not even the Progenitors get the higher level versions (MK2 and above), which I have NEVER seen outside of creating one with the scenario editor.

Can you imagine accidentally stumbling upon an MK3 armed with a string distruptor in early game? Surely, massive pwng would ensue. One more thing. I have heard tales of a Meteor random event (like sunspots, hailstorms, and eruptions) that devastates part of the map. Does this occur in SMAX, or is it the product of a mod?

I normally play on the lower difficulties, if that has anything to do with it.

I have never seen AI Battle Ogres other than the starting ones from the progenitors, but that may be just because of my limited SMAX experience (less than ten games, go figure).
You may only get Battle Ogres via Pod Popping, with any faction. Higher level Battle Ogres may appear only after a number of turns elapsed, as do copters.
Battle Ogres may be cloned via dimensional rifts. This is especially neat, as you can, in theory, get two of them by year 2103 (Kataphraktoi).
I have never witnessed the meteor strike myself, I think it was dropped from the final version and it is just one of many unused messages among the text files.

See this thread (and links therein) for Battle Ogre sightings:

I see MK2s about once a year and have never seen an MK3.

The meteor strike occurs in unmodded SMAX (it's happened to me) if random events are turned on, but is rarer than most other events.

        I got a mk2 the other day.

meteor is easy to see-just play vs unboosted AI and get about a zillion times stronger than them(IE play normal) i got it twice in a row a year ago when i played PK. fortunatly i was using 4 tile spacing that game and i could build VoP\Ascent if i wanted, so no biggie.

Awesome. So it IS possible to get an MK3; just incredibly unlikely.

Does the asteroid cause a Garland like crater, or just cause a bunch of damage to select tiles?

IIRC no one has ever gotten a Mk 3 through normal gameplay.

I have seen lots of ogres, including a horde of MK2s and some MK3s poped from pods on a super large custom map that is in the files section here on poly (in a game with all human factions, some standard, some custom). I suspect that on the standard map the desginers have somehow specially limited the number of ogre pops in manner that does not apply to custom maps.

Not correct - I once popped a pod in the late 23xx's and got one. You need to have researched pretty much the whole tree for it to be available.

It was too late to do much with it, but fun nonetheless!

                  cause a Garland like crater
                  is the answer.

There is a way to shut down certain pod popping results.
If you have created a scenario with any of pod popping results disabled, the same copy of SMACX will now always run like that, regardless to what type of game you run (SP/MP) and whether it's the scenario you created or simply auto-generated one.

To swith such effects off, you have to create a scenario with all pod options enabled.

For MP, does this then only tunes back to the creator of the game, or does any player/participant which created a scenario and tinkered with the podpoppings before have their results when the turn is on him?

Just asking because this could be an exploit.

I've been playing a long while and never heard of that one. It's a possible massive exploit if true. I'll have to do some tests.

For online play it's the host.
For PBEM it's the CMN, because the settings get embedded into scenario file.

I've played a few TCP/IP games where's the host had switched off at least worms and AAs.

                            bT,

Interesting. Since the effect is persistent, it must be stored somewhere. Do you know where?

I'd check the last modified files to find that out if I had a grasp of how the cheat is done.
