  • TCP/IP Connection

I browsed around a little bit upon finding this place and didn't find anything on thus, so I apologize if I'm creating a useless thread.

I've been having a great deal of frustration trying to successfully connect with a friend of mine for a TCP/IP game. Our IP addresses are static, correct and verified. Our software firewalls are not interfering (this is known since the error to follow occurs even when they are completely disabled) and so it seems that it may simply be my router.

I am running Windows XP and have the Alpha Centauri Win 2000/XP Update listed here. -> http://www.firaxis.com/games/downloads.php

I do not have the Alien Crossfire expansion.

If anyone could offer any assistance with this, it would be greatly appreciated. At the very least, I would like to ask that someone post here, the necessary ports which must be forwarded in order to allow a game to take place. Thank you.

While not having an idea what your problem is, copying an error message would be handy, also if your using the IPX i believe there is some problem with that... There are a number of people here who must know the answer to every tech problem in smax, and one of them will probably come along soon enough.

Well, hosting goes just fine for both of us.
However, when one of us tries to Join the other, we always get a small "Game Not Found" SMAC window with an OK button; this takes about five seconds to pop up.

I suggest that you post this question in the multiplayer forum. They might be able to help you.

EDIT: sorry, just read your second post..

Check if one of you is going

          Multiplayer->TCP/IP->Host game

          and the other

Multiplayer->TCP/IP->Join game (after knowing first one already set it up).

Then make sure both of you have the game patched with the patch, then check whether you have closed ports (go search Google for 'lookup ports', should give you some site which does it).

IIRC one of the ports 4xxx was the one which should've been open.

And often problem for playing SMAC through TCP/IP is also misconfigured router (it appears that there are very many sysadmins in the world who don't know how to do it properly).

*nod* Yes, we are. And we both have the patch.

I know how to configure my router, but I just don't have the port numbers for SMAC. All Googling and other general prodding of the internet has been fruitless, I'm sorry to say. :/

My firewall is ZoneAlarm and doesn't have any sort of option for listening to ports that I am aware of.

I believe SMAC uses DirectPlay for TCP/IP Multiplaying. In that case you should forward the ports 6073 (UDP), 47624 (TCP) and 2300-2400 (TCP & UDP) to your gaming pc (and - depending on the model - reboot your router)
