    Hi,
i want to play Alpha on my new System ( Athlon 64 3200,
Windows Xp), but when i try to start the game it
says " cpu is not supported" and ends in a flash.

Moral of this story: always read topped threads named frequently asked questions before asking questions.

              Help!
Yes I've read the Firaxis FAQ and have downloaded all the updates, But (forgive the boasting) my FX-57 AMD processor still crashes and reports as Unsupported after installing Alpha Centauri and then installing and running the "XP-fix update".
I have "Asked Sid" to see if the XP-fix is likely to be updated and to express regret at both not being able to play one of my very favourite games, and that [because EA still have the rights to SMAC] there are no plans to revise and re-programme/re-engineer Alpha Crossfire and Alien Centauri.
Meanwhile I'm loving CIV4 - its everything Civ3 should have been, although I'm not enjoying trying to download the hefty 45MB Civ4 latest update (v1.52) on dial-up.

                  Many Thanks Dr. Zoidberg.

To save anyone else the hassle of going through all the threads:

Smac/x will not run in 'Windows XP' - remedies.

1a. Uninstall SMAC & SMACX then Run "Disk Defragmenter" from 'Accessories\System Tools' menu, twice.

1b. ensure you are in Administrator log-on mode.

                  2. ensure you have disabled your Anti-Virus software, SpyWare also. A "clean boot" procedure editing 'msconfig' file may be advisable [see below].

                  3. Install "Alpha Centauri".

                  4. Install "Alien Crossfire"

                  5. Install & Run "SMAC_Win2000_XP_Compatibility_Update_v1.03f.exe"

                  6. Run/Play "Alpha Centauri". Expect game to crash, if it doesn't Fine.

                  7. If game crashed :

                  edit 'smac.ini' :
                  insert line (omit quotes) "ForceOldVoxelAlgorithm=1"
                  then
insert line (omit quotes) "Video Mode=1024"
                  or
insert line (omit quotes) "Video Mode=800"

                  8. Run/Play "Alpha Crossfire" with appropriate game CD (Alien Crossfire CD should allow you to play either game).

                  Clean 'Boot' Procedure :

                  1. ensure you are in Administrator log-on mode.

                  2. select 'Start', select 'Run', type "msconfig", click "OK".

                  3. untick all boxes - leave "use original BOOT.INI" Radio-button alone.

                  4. select "Services" Tab,

                  5. tick "hide all Microsoft Services"-box, click "Disable All"-box, click "OK".

                  6. ignore/close any error message, click on "restart".

Windows will now close-down and should restart without any 'Normal Junk" in the "system tray".
