  • copy protection?

How come I can't make a copy of the planetary pack? Did the developers burn the bad sector on there again to not let you make a copy?

I dont know, but discussing copy protection isnt the best way to increase your popularity. PM's,though....

I thought Legaly you are allowed to make 1 copy of any software that you own for your personal backup.

If your child grabbed the original disk and cracked it in half??

Or if you ran over it in your wheelie chair, like I did to my CtP2 disk. At least it was no great loss in my case, but if I did that to SMAX, I think I may actually go mental.

I can run the game from my backup. Just cant install from it!

With Grandkids (7and 8 yrs old) running arround, I try to only have my backups within touching distance!!

My origanal (planatary pack) is safely tucked away. I receintly gave my origanal SMAX to my Daughter (Adult) to use, with the understanding that she protect it with her LIFE. In case I ever need it back!

Legal minded people have a hard time rationalizing and instead assume all customers are theives. Myself, i have no problem supporting noCDs and backups. I prefer using PM for the technicals on that though.

Slysoft has some products that ive never seen fail for backups. They always work, unless the original was toast already.

Somehow, I have 3 original SMAC CDs...so legally, I could install it on two of my friends computers and have a party...

Only have one SMAX CD, though, unfortunately...

The CD is kind of scratched now. So how did you people manage to copy the disk?

You could keep it in a case so its nice for all time. some small scratches wont hurt. my smac cd is quite scratched, but no problem on it. have you even tried copying it yet before giving up?

The reason that I found out that it can't be copied is by trying to copy it.

If you need to make a legitimate backup copy of software you own (due to you anticipating your scratched CD getting moreso), you might want to look up gamecopyworld, an internet resource that prevents corporations denying you your fair use rights.

I don't usually enourage people to go looking around there, but from what I hear it's very difficult to get SMAC (and especially SMACX) in some parts of the world these days.
I don't take any risks, my Planetary Pack is snug and secure in a box whilst I play from an image file...

Finally, don't go pirating SMAC - if ever there was a game worth paying full price for, this is it.

                            I completely agree.

I keep two copies of both (SMAC and SMAX) CDs just in case.

Agree 100% which is why i have a SMAC cd...unfortunatly i still have not managed to procure a SMAX cd,though i would if i could.i would LOVE to have the movies and audio of smax :/ heres a ongoing bid war but i have to worry enough about having food to eat(!) without plunking 50$ down, and i know some OTers have expressed similar opinions.
