How hard is it to find the PC version of SMAX?

Civ4 was an OK game and had its points (I really do like the way it handles probes - much more realistic IMO than SMAC's "infiltrate once, get the map, and your Golden" approach), but it just didn't have that essence and breadth of game that captured me from the first moment that I loaded up the game the way that SMAC(X) did. I think I'm already migrating back to playing more SMAC(X) than Civ4....

Although I'm no Spring Chicken, why I've never considered myself to be playing an archaic game! The intracacies, nuances, and complexities that arise (especially in PBEM where players are continually either inventing or rediscovering new strategies!) are rarely matched by any other game I've encountered!

My question is, how do we get the Mac version of SMAC? I know I can buy SMAX easily enough; it's for sale still, but SMAX is useless without SMAC. Any ideas, anyone?

I agree that the game has nearly unparralelled strategic complexities and this is what has kept me playing for such a long time. Whilst I think I will probably move on to playing mostly (not only) CivIV, SMAC and CivII will always be my favourites of the group. CivII got me into the series (never played 1 ) and SMAC kept me playing through CivIII (which I also never played due to such poor community feedback). I know plenty of other young people who still play - most of us were barely teenagers (if at all... I can't really remember ) when SMAC hit the shelves!

SMAC will live for a long time yet.

I hope this isn't a issue of thread ressurection but, I finally got SMAC and SMAX, after installing both and the winXP update, well... SMAC seems to start up ok, but SMAX, when I chose to play that version, I just go back to my desktop, is there something I need to do in order to be able to play SMAX?

seems to not do anything. SMAC runs perfectly, but when I am in the menu to choose to play SMAC or SMAX, when I chose SMAX, it just takes me back to my desktop, and I installed the XP patch.. what am I doing wrong

Try this: Create a shortcut to terranx.exe (the SMAX executable) and then configure that to run in compatibility mode. Use the shortcut to start the game.

well after installing the v2.0 patch for Alien Crossfire, I made a little progress, but not much, here is were I am stuck at now, and the SMAX CD is in the DVD drive, which should work, right?

Is the SMAX CD in the drive from which you installed the game? If not, that could be the problem.

yes it is.

Hmm ...

The error message is the one you get if the SMAX CD is not in the drive, yet your CD is in the drive. Does the CD display in Explorer prior to starting the game? Have you rebooted your system since getting the error?

if you mean it shows up on My Computer were it shows Devices with Removible Drives, then yes, and after restarting my system I still am reciveing the message.

If you eject the disc and reinsert it, does autorun work? Does the game then run?

If none of this helps, you could try uninstalling SMAC and SMAX. Then reinstall in this order:

* Install SMAC.

* Play a new game with 2 or 3 turns (to create Alpha Centauri.ini).

* Install SMAC patch 4.0.

* Install the SMAC win 2k/XP compatibility update.

* Install SMAX.

* Install SMAX patch v2.0.
