  • How hard is it to find the PC version of SMAX?

I was just wondering how hard it would be to find the PC version of SMAX or even SMAC, I own both the Mac versions of the games, but now I own a PC, so I want to get the PC version of the game so I can play it again. So, anyone know how hard it is to find these games?

Look for the "Laptop Collection" which retailed for ~$30.00 a couple years ago. Comes with Smax and Smac and a couple other games. Finding the original Smax or Planetary Pack on Ebay is expensive though people still find it..........

For me it's easy, all I have to do is open my CD drive. For you though.....

Check out “e b games” or “gamestop” or other computer game stores.
I found Laptop Collection in Decatur IL this August (2005)
While looking for SMAX, I found several copies of SMAC.
1 used in Indianapolis, and at multiple locations, I found an EA 4 game pack of world dominators (this may not be the correct name).

            Good luck and patience

i'm freaking considering offering to buy off any gamer that will burn it for me lol i found 4 copies whilst searching. All very expensive. The world wants SMACX, it should be re-produced for a limited time to fill the demand.

It's real easy if you are willing to spend the money. ebay, amazon.com etc. I'm glad I bought mine when I did though. As the laptop collection is now very hard to find. And I got it when it was a reasonable price- around $29.

Although I still feel the original 7 factions are the most balanced, and I'm not real keen on the aliens, I do like the new features and buildings etc the expansion pack adds.

Oddly, enough, I found a whole bunch of original SMACX boxes at a flea market. They were also selling Yoot's Tower and a bunch of other older games that were neither unheard of, nor stellar hits. In retrospect, if they weren't cheap knock-offs, I should have bought them up and sold them on ebay for profit. All I wanted was the box and the manual, since I already had a cd (nudge, nudge). But yeah, hard to find an original copy. Planetary Pack and the Laptop Collection are your best bets. Any place that sells used computer games or software is a good start to look for them.
It's really Synthetic God... I guess I didn't notice my own typo.

I checked all the above suggested sources plus some others that came up in various searches.

The only one I found that was actually for sale was 1 used copy of the Laptop Collection on Amazon. Asking price was 129 USD. I didn't pursue any further to see if it was actually available (too high).

Its also available via Media Play.

Very interesting that a 6 year old game sells for this much! I wonder what EA Games and Firaxis think of this, especially since their not seeing a penny in royalties from these resales!

Also, out of curiosity, has anyone seen this phenomenon with any other old games?

I wouldn't mind if they produced a new batch - I treat my copy very carefully, but could easily be persuaded to invest in a backup.

No, and it makes me to see all those new people that (re)discover SMAC/X after trying CIV 4 and saying it's a great game - maybe I'm not some old geezer playing an archaic game after all
With or without religion, you would have good people doing good things and evil people doing evil things. But for good people to do evil things, that takes religion.
