  • Unity Pods

    Just a question:

Do you always pop the pods when you first see them, or do you wait sometimes? Ofcourse, I'm only talking about the ones you are sure to get anyway, like next to one of your bases or so.

The benefits I see of waiting:
=> Wait till you have expensive crawlers so mineral-completion pods are converted to raw minerals where you need them.
=> A few early mindworms / fungal pods can be a big setback.

Ofcourse a few early benefits can get you a big turn advantage.

The first fifteen years mind worms can't do much harm. So an extra reason to pop asap before MY 2115.

before 2115 I pop everything I see. Time is of the essence, you must gather them before your opponents do. Worms at this point are free money.

After 2115 I tend to leave pods that will be beneath future expansion as a pod popped in the base grid very rarely gives up worms.

Sea pods I try and pop with 4 movement points to spare. IoDs move towards the nearest inhabitied shore and if you get your foil out of the way then it'll survive.

On land, with a non-positive Planet rating, starting on 2114, I avoid popping pods that aren't next to bases, since I'll probably found bases next to them soon enough. At sea, I usually use 0-3t-3 transports, which can take hits from IoDs, or I escort transports with attackers if not running FM.

If I am playing Map of Planet, some of the pods I'll keep popping and reloading the game until I get a particular item...almost always I try to get a bonus resource, as I know which pods usually produce these...

On the Standard Map of Planet, one pod gives bonus minerals, one pod gives bonus nutrients, and one pod gives bonus energy...the best pop though is the one that sometimes gives you an aquifer...the entire river litterally covers the monsoon jungle...add on three bonus resources, and you got yourself the best land on the map by far...

Usually I play with the no/few pod option, but still waits until certain techs are researched - getting free techs too early disturbs the beeline. After that I pops any pod in sight as fast as possible.

ill pop them if my unit was going to move to that tile to continue exploring or leave them till i have high-cost units or crawlers to prototype. if its more than 2-3 tiles from my closest base i pop all of them(and i get all the ones in the start radius)

I'm pretty conservative when it comes to pod popping, moreso than I should be probably. Playing Free Market with low support makes me highly squeamish about worms.

But getting back on topic, I usually pop most as soon as possible, but save some for later just in case they give good tech bonuses later in game.

I pop land unity pods after 2115 only if they are far away and near other factions.
