I always liked using the crawler (trawler) version myself rather than other types of ships anmd confess I would usually send them out unarmored. For the same mineral investment, you can have the same number of radar platforms and add some military in the neighborhood

Yes, that too is my preference. Just a bunch of trawlers with deep radar acting as expendable pickets, backed up by a couple boats and an interceptor or two. (Running FM alot I tend to avoid building needles as part of my garrison)

I agree with you when playing MP...as for SP, you should be able to get almost every secret project...
Anyways, Doctrine: Airpower requires 10 techs and PSA requires 14 techs (15 on SMAX), but strangely, I sometimes get PSA before Airpower...
