  • Smack sez "Hi Poly"

    Er............

Sorry for disappearin', first of all.

To make a long story short, my work on Aldebaran became too much like work, and I simply left. I had some RL things to deal with, and I successfully avoided them

I expect that my absence from The Big Game was easily forgiven: Chaos Theory and Illuminatus had the ball. But I am deeply sorry for leaving all those PBEM's in the lurch. That was irresponsible. I deserve nothing. No respect. I am officially "Unreliable"........and all that.

On the other hand, I do hope to eventually finish up work on Aldebaran II and give it a website. Unbelievably, it's still listed on Firaxis' site, in it's unsightly first incarnation.

    So, how goes it 'Poly?

    -=Smack=-

P.S.: I can be reached at NOSPAMsmacksim@charter.net, as #endgame figured out. Secondly, I name #endgame and Darsnan as official purveyors of Aldebaran if I go poof, which I hope will not happen too much anymore......

    SMACK! Welcome Back man.

No hard feelings here, just glad to hear they didn't pull your body out of a river or something.

Completely understood - I think a lot of us, from time to time, feel a little overwhelmed with our responsibilities.....

Oh no, not more responsibility - augh!

Anyways, welcome back! And I'm sure we'll talk soon!

        Thanks D, and Livid.

I went on a little exploration.

I found out that SMAC is the champ of strategy games.

        -----------------------------------

Livid, hey. Ever since Shawnmmc's deal (I hope I got that right), I've been thinking that we might do something to support people offline. I don't know what that might be, but I want to think about it.

I know who Shawnmmc is, but I am unaware of his "deal".

I actually made a longer post and deleted it, revealing all my side-trips.

Lemme do it again, since you asked:

Damn. I deleted again! I'm too embarrassed, I guess.

I've recently come to abhore Rome:Total Whore. My very second post on the TWC forums got named in their little weekly editorial: General Sun's Tent #3. I ravaged the game in a review of sorts.

(That thing about "Rome: Almost a Strategy Game")

I checked out Paradox's games, and am still trying to give them a chance. Unfortunately I started with Victoria: Empire Under the Sun, which is like trying to read "Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire" in Greek. It's a mess. But I have hope for their company, somehow...........

I played a few non-strategy games as well, including The Sims2.

But all this does is confirm the fact that I've been a total SNERF to my PBEMs and other commitments here at 'Poly. I'm sorry. "Halsey acted Stupidly Ryan"

I didn't want to start a rumor or anything. I just remember someone who was in hospital for a few weeks and their wife posting in the MP forums. I thought it was Shawn, but it could've been someone else. The point was that there could/should/would be a way to post when you have to be offline suddenly. I was thinking of writing a little script that would log-on and post an "I'm away for some unforseen reason" to all known forums do-hicky. That's all.

The way I see it, if you plan on dropping off the boards a quick post stating so is just fine. Problem is who actually plans on these things happening?

And nothing wrong with getting into other games. It is probably unhealthly for us to always play one game anyway. When Vanguard and Oblivion are released, I'll be going MIA.

The bottom line is that SMAC is such an awesome game I keep coming back for more.

There's always time for SMAC, even if it's one or two turns a day.
I'm continuing a MP game with a friend of mine, and I'm rediscovering Morrowind. Glad to see that there's another TES fan who's also a SMAC player. Or, considering the forum, a SMAC player who's a TES fan.
I'm just wondering if I'll have enough juice to run Oblivion!

If I could get it to work on XP, I'd still be playing Daggerfall too To this day, nothing could touch the sheer scale that game had.

I basically have a TBS vein occupied by SMAC....

an RPG vein occupied by Morrowind and at one time by Everquest......

and a FPS vein occupied by Counter-Strike

I spent the better part of my late 20's on these games

PBEMs? ICBMs? PBs? BEMs? There's some common denominator there. Could it be our favorite TBS?

Fascinating work you and your colleagues are doing with Aldebaran. I look fwd to playing Aldebaran 2 (or 3 ) when I finish my thesis, as then (Gw ) my ban (from computer games) will be lifted.

Hmm... I play the Elder Scrolls a little. And I'm still playing Rome. Sid Meier's Pirates. Zork . Just started SP SMAX again. And, of course, Arcanum.
