    I noticed that, in my last several games, my first base wasn't getting 10 free minerals when founded. The initial scout patrol was taking two or more turns to build (instead of zero turns). All subsequent bases did get the correct 10 free minerals to start.

    I finally figured out that this was caused by my having turned off the "look first" option in the initial game setup options. When I turned "look first" back on, my first base got 10 free minerals as expected.

    I don't recall this "feature" being pointed out before. Can anyone else reproduce this situation? Perhaps this is unique to my system. It occurs on both SMAC and SMAX, fully patched, with or without the SMAX "no cd" crack.

    As far as I can tell, with "look first" off, your first base starts with half of the 10 minerals new bases get, and then produces food/minerals/energy for year 2100, before you start playing.
