I remember back when SMAC first came out you could play online on on the SMAC site with an application that ran on the webpage and launched the game. Does anyone have a clue whether that software is available or any projects along that line? (Obviously there are a few sites like this one to post for games, and ICQ but a site where you could "meet" and play the game would be a nice resource.)

Looks like it was a Java app of some kind, so perhaps it is duplicable, or even findable somewhere. Here's a link to archive.org's capture of the old page:

It'd be great to have a service like this up again.

Is was in fact a Java applet, although I doubt with the security changes that have occurred since then the applet would work out of the box. Does anyone have any ideas as to the best person to contact to hunt down the old applet source?
Alternatively, does anyone know if you can start SMAC from the command line or with a config file to join a multiplayer game? Any links or a list of options you can pass to terran.exe would be useful. I would guess that the way they did it before was through DirectX, something I know nothing about...
