your example of Santiago just walking around the command nexus is very flawed. if ANY faction leader were to be out on the frontlines leading her troops personally, it would be Santiago. Havent you read Centauri Dawn?

There have been at least three "who would play whom in the SMAC movies" threads here over the years. Too bad they're gone, some of them were pretty good.
Some of my nominations:
Sven - Brad Pitt
Domai - Gary Oldman
Miriam - Cate Blanchett
Yang - Chow Yun Fat (the guy from Crouching Tiger)He's got the Midas touch.
But he touched it too much!

Anyway, having the commander of the entire faction and not just the military forces right up there on the front lines is just damn *stupid* (even though with the Spartans, the difference between the faction and the army may be small). If Santiago dies (and dying is a very regular occurance on the front lines) the Spartan Federation will probably go down with her. I can't believe that even that right-wing loonie would endanger everything she's worked so hard for just to be close to the killing or to lead a small fraction of her entire military into battle."I'm too young and too male to be the mother of a seventeen year old female me!"

In fiction, to improve the story, hero shielding happens. It doesn't have to be entirely plausible, but it avoids the problem of having main characters either repeatedly die or be in uninteresting places.
In the SMAC world, the Spartans lose. At some point Santiago would be on the front lines anyway in a desperate attempt to improve morale even further."Cutlery confused Stalin"

To be honest I think the majority of the cast would need to be unknow, or little known actors while being anchored by a few box office drawing stars to bring in the big bucks."They’re lazy troublemakers, and they all carry weapons." - SMAC Manual, Page 59 Regarding Drones
