After some time of multiplaying smac/x I have noticed that there are many versions of rules for playing it in mp. Also another discovery was SMAC Academy, where there is a list of detected bugs in this wonderful game counting smth like 77 presently if I remember correctly.
What I think of is creating an Ultimate Ruleset (if that can be done, ofcourse, as close to perfection as possible).
It would need also to be in quite user-friendly form. If there is 77 bugs, from which maybe not all are important for MP, but many. A new player might be bored after maybe second or third page of reading it... In order to make it "edible" I would propose the following structure:
Part One: Rules
[Rules pertaining to game Preferences]
1.
2.
3.
....
[Rules pertaining to diplomacy]
1.
2.
3.
....
[Rules pertaining to bases upkeep]
1.
....
[Rules pertaining to unit movements]
1.
...
[Rules .. probe team actions]
1.
....
[.... and more]
Part Two - Explanations of rules
[Rules pertaining to game Preferences]
1.
2.
3.
....
And here these rules from part one might be explained in detail. This way players would understand why some rules are the way they are. And just for the sake of quick reference these explanations would not increase the volume of the first part, which would be short and precise. Reader might for example print only first part for quick reference. Also second part might be kept separately, you just need first part most often.
This ruleset would address all known and confirmed bugs important in MP.
Just an idea and rough draft of it.
