  • More XP Problems

    I just got a new computer with XP Home and now SMAC/X won’t work. I get the dreaded message ‘cpu not supported’, then get kicked out to the desktop. I have installed the XP patch and no joy. I also searched for XP threads here, but was stymied since I can’t call up threads more than 100 days old (???) or simply missed them.

    If anyone could assist I would be very grateful – not quite a slave for life, but pretty close!

    Failing that, I can keep my old P3 450 for SMAC/X, even if it seems like a waste.

    What is infuriating is that my old P3 with XP Home (a clean install on a new HD from a year and a half ago) runs SMAC/X without the XP patch just fine. What gives? Is Bill out to get me?

    Bad Bill! Bad Bill!

    Hmph.

    Have you tried forceoldvoxelalgorithm=1 trick?
    .ini file should look like this:
    [Alpha Centauri]
    ds3d=1
    eax=1
    FastUnitAnim=0
    SmoothUnitAnim=0
    MainFontSize=16
    InterludeFontSize=16
    DisableOpeningMovie=0

    [PREFERENCES]
    ForceOldVoxelAlgorithm=1
    Video Mode=1024

      How do you get the funky square in the INI file?

          Chaunk is correct, but the square is not needed. Here is how my ini looks:

            I got the XP patch, I actually had no problem running the game in XP Pro (buisness edition). So I can't complain

            I'm not sure what it is exactly.

              Well, the copy-and-paste worked! I had to get my Outlook file configured first, but now I'm rarin' to go!

              Thanks!!

                I'm surprised that more people don't use the

                WindowsFileBox=1

                variant - much easier to use than Firaxis' clunky file management system

                  What does that do, exactly Googlie?

                    It brings up the saves. maps, sceanrios, etc in windows format (just as if you'd opened a folder in explorer - you can drag and drop, delete old turns , etc etc with much more agility than with the firaxis in-game file system)

                    Here's how I load a sparta turn:

                      Wow, good tip. I'm going to use it first chance I get.

                        Ah, didn't know that. But then I'm an IT flunk at that. Thanks Googlie!

                            It's not at all related to the ACDG map or gamesave.

                            It's a scenario that Maniac built, to pop a bunch of pods and log the answers - 50 on clear coastal waters, 50 in fungus coastal, 50 in trench, etc

                            Amazing the diff it makes whether your foil is in clear popping in clear, or in clear popping in fungus, and especially in fungus popping in fungus

                            That's the benefit of having a Command Center - simulations like that are so easy to build when needing to know likely odds

                            GGLIE

                            (I can send you the file to try for yourself if you like)

                              Thanks, but right now I have to tackle the XP problem myself with my new notebook...
